Trump Invokes Section 232 To Seek Foreign Supplies Of Processed Critical Minerals, Avoids Tariffs For Now

Trump Invokes Section 232 To Seek Foreign Supplies Of Processed Critical Minerals, Avoids Tariffs For Now President Trump said on Wednesday he had opted against imposing tariffs on rare earths, lithium and other critical minerals - for now - and instead ordered his administration to seek supplies from international trading partners. By invoking Section 232 not to slap immediate tariffs, but to renegotiate how the US imports processed critical minerals, the White House defers a decision on duties that could further roil the US economy, especially while the Supreme Court is still deliberating the legality of Trump's tariffs (and just punted on the ruling for a second time).Trump ordered US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to "enter into negotiations with trading partners to adjust the imports of (critical minerals) so that such imports will not threaten to impair the national security of the United States."In acknowledging the country is far from being self-reliant for its critical minerals needs, though, it may rankle the domestic mining sector according to Reuters. As DA Sails noted on X, the decision "matters because the real bottleneck isn’t mining...it’s refining and downstream processing. That’s where the U.S. is most exposed." As such, the goal of the decision is to "work with allies to set more stable trade terms (including price floors), reduce reliance on non-market suppliers, and rebuild domestic capacity."The negotiations, Trump said, should promote the use of price floors for critical minerals, a step long sought by Western miners and policymakers. G7 finance ministers and those from other major economies like Australia met in Washington earlier this week to discuss such a step, for example. And if Greer and Lutnick's negotiations are not successful, Trump said he would consider setting minimum import prices for critical minerals or "may take other measures," without elaborating. As Reuters notes, Trump is essentially agreeing to a recommendation by Lutnick, who last April launched a national security review under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 and in October submitted his findings to the president.Lutnick's report found that the U.S. is "too reliant on foreign sources" of critical minerals, lacks access to a secure supply chain, and is experiencing "unsustainable price volatility" for the materials, with all those factors fueling a "significant national security vulnerability that could be exploited by foreign actors."It was not immediately clear why Trump waited until this month to act on Lutnick's report. It is well known that China is a top global producer of more than half of the 54 minerals considered critical by the U.S. Geological Survey, for example, and has been curtailing exports in the past year amid its trade dispute with Washington. The country is also a major refiner of critical minerals."Mining a mineral domestically does not safeguard the national security of the United States if the United States remains dependent on a foreign country for the processing of that mineral," Trump said in the order.Following news that US held off from imposing import tariffs on critical minerals, silver and other metals retreated from record highs as investors took profits following a blistering rally in the space. Yen steadies on intervention warnings, but Takaichi trade keeps pressure intact

Summary:Yen neared 160 on Wednesday as “Takaichi trade” stays dominantMOF and U.S. rhetoric triggers pullback from highsAuthorities escalate intervention warningsFiscal-policy expectations keep pressure on yenEquity inflows reinforce currency hedging flowsThe so-called “Takaichi trade” is expected to remain firmly in place heading into Japan’s snap Lower House election next month, with many market participants judging that actual FX intervention may be the only effective tool left to reverse yen weakness in the near term. The yen briefly approached the psychologically important ¥160 per dollar level this week, prompting a sharp escalation in official rhetoric. Verbal warnings from Japan’s Ministry of Finance during London trading hours, Tokyo officials intensify verbal intervention on the Japanese yenJapanese Yen rebounds amid barrage of verbal intervention and "sell the fact" tradefollowed by comments from U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Bessent warns on excessive FX volatility in talks with Japan, urges sound communicationhelped cap USD/JPY at 159.45 before triggering a pullback toward the mid-158s. Traders have long viewed the 160 level as a de-facto intervention threshold, and the coordinated tone from Tokyo and Washington unsettled positioning.Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said authorities would take “appropriate action against excessive currency moves without excluding any options,” describing recent yen declines as rapid and out of line with fundamentals. Japan’s top currency diplomat Atsushi Mimura echoed the message, warning that one-sided, speculative moves could force a response. Japan last intervened in July 2024, when USD/JPY neared 162.Despite the warnings, the structural drivers behind yen weakness remain intact. Markets continue to price in expansionary fiscal policy under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, with her popularity and the ruling LDP’s prospects for reclaiming a Lower House majority underpinning expectations of looser fiscal settings. Japanese equities have surged on this theme, with the Nikkei 225 and TOPIX hitting record highs, drawing heavy foreign inflows hedged via yen selling.Importer demand for dollars has also remained persistent amid elevated global prices, while the clearing of upside USD/JPY option barriers since mid-2025 has reduced resistance to further gains. Although Bessent has urged Japan to lean more on faster Bank of Japan rate hikes rather than intervention, the BOJ’s cautious normalisation path suggests that without direct action, yen weakness could re-emerge once election-related noise fades. The chart above is using hourly candles, these are daily for a longer perspective. How Independent Is The Federal Reserve?

How Independent Is The Federal Reserve? Authored by Jeffrey Tucker via The Epoch Times,The Department of Justice has opened an investigation into cost overruns in the Federal Reserve’s renovation project, with particular focus on Fed Chairman Jerome Powell and his testimony to Congress in June 2025. The question is whether he perjured himself concerning what he knew and when.Powell responded with a highly unusual video message to the public. He defended himself and further speculated that this investigation is merely a tactic to interfere with the Fed’s independence.“The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the president,” he said. “This is about whether the Fed will be able to continue to set interest rates based on evidence and economic conditions—or whether instead monetary policy will be directed by political pressure or intimidation.”He speaks to a long-running dispute on the relationship between the Fed and the executive branch. The organizational chart of the federal government puts the central bank clearly under the authority of the president. That said, there is a long-running understanding that its operations would be politically independent and that presidents would not and could not interfere. The courts have affirmed its independence in passing, but the status of the institution in constitutional law remains murky.Powell’s certain supposition that this is not really about the renovation project might in fact be incorrect. In July 2025, Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) referred Powell for criminal investigation over false testimony. Powell had denied to lawmakers that the renovation involved a “VIP dining room, premium marble, water features, and a roof terrace garden.”But Luna found the plans submitted to the National Capital Planning Commission that clearly had all those features, requiring cost overruns of $600 million. Looking through the plans, the sheer opulence and scale are what stand out. Powell grants that costs have ballooned but blames unexpected discoveries of new needs and, ironically, inflation.Contrary to Powell’s dismissals, this is actually serious. The subpoena is based on genuine grievances that Powell simply lied to Congress.Independence is one thing, but spending $600 million without congressional authorization is another matter entirely. In his statement, Powell said, “I have carried out my duties without political fear or favor, focused solely on our mandate of price stability and maximum employment.”Here we have another problem. We have just lived through the second worst inflationary bout in a century of monetary policy. The great inflation of 2021–2024 reduced the overall purchasing power of the dollar by 25 percent to 30 percent for a broad index of goods and services. Some particulars show far higher price increases. You can probably think of examples in which the posted price has doubled since 2019.In other words, this is not the most opportune time for Powell to cite the Fed’s dedication to price stability. What’s more, the inflation that shocked the country was a direct consequence of Powell’s decision in March 2020 to flatline interest rates to make possible vast funding that would flow as part of the COVID-19 pandemic response. He had spent the two previous years gradually increasing rates as a means of patching up the Fed’s broken balance sheet. The problem he had sought to solve with higher rates traced all the way back to 2008 under the leadership of Ben Bernanke. The Fed adopted a zero interest rate policy to bail out financial institutions following the collapse of the market for mortgage-backed securities. Part of the scheme involved paying banks for deposits at a higher rate than the market would bear, thus forestalling inflationary pressure. The downside of such a policy involved grave distortions in industrial production structures plus a Fed holding on to useless debt assets. Powell had been determined to reverse this error and at least get the Fed on a sound financial footing. All was going well until the first week of March. Someone, somehow, got to him and persuaded him to completely reverse course. The result was a default back to zero interest rates for the next two years, with disastrous results. The rate of money creation during this period broke all records. Unlike the quantitative easing of 2005, the new money was sent directly to Americans’ bank accounts and became hot money on the street. This fueled inflation never before experienced by anyone younger than 45. Far from being transitory, it was devastating, wiping out the whole value of the stimulus payments. There can be no question that the Fed was responsible. As the inflation roared, Powell stepped in with the fastest rate increases on record. This policy likely contributed to the taming of the inflationary beast. And yet just as we were approaching the national election of 2024, he reversed policy yet again, in a manner that could easily be interpreted as a boon to then-Vice President Kamala Harris’s presidential campaign and the Democrats.Looked at in total, these are not the actions of an independent Fed but rather one that changes policy based on political pressure. Powell denies it, but the evidence is rather clear. This was perhaps not the best time for the Fed to renovate its headquarters with luxury accommodations and $600 million in cost overruns. Even leaving aside the sheer power of the central bank to manipulate political outcomes, it surely needs some oversight from the people’s elected representatives. For the central bank to claim that it is an institution dedicated entirely to economic science and the public interest is a real stretch. The Constitution includes no mention of an independent central bank. Its mentions of money include only a provision that only gold and silver can be coined as money by states, an implicit rebuke of unsound money. This is why the institution of a national bank has invited so much controversy over the years. On July 10, 1832, President Andrew Jackson issued a veto of the chartering of the Second National Bank. It is one of the most famous presidential vetoes in U.S. history. It was also a genius move, bolstering his standing and guaranteeing his reelection. The United States was thereby protected against a central bank until one emerged in secret in 1913.The truth is that central banking has never been popular in U.S. history. This is for good reason. Inflation is a genuine trauma. Since the Fed’s creation, the value of the dollar has been on a long downward slide, and is now worth about 3 cents from 1913. This is not a record about which any chairman of the Fed should feel pride. Tyler DurdenWed, 01/14/2026 - 09:40

US Inflation Is Stickier Than It Appears as CPI Masks Rising PCE Risks

US inflation data initially looked encouraging, but a closer reading suggests price pressures remain more persistent than headline numbers imply. While December’s Consumer Price Index showed a modest easing in core inflation, rising food costs and underlying dynamics point to continued upside risks for the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge. Markets reacted cautiously to the data, with investors reluctant to price in aggressive rate cuts. According to Reuters, the latest figures reinforce concerns that inflation may settle above the Fed’s [...]The post US Inflation Is Stickier Than It Appears as CPI Masks Rising PCE Risks appeared first in UK on InvestingCube.

10 Commandment Displays Became Law In Texas, Then The Lawsuits Came

10 Commandment Displays Became Law In Texas, Then The Lawsuits Came Authored by Darlene McCormick Sanchez via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),Melissa Martin, a veteran Texas educator with some 30 years of experience, was thrilled when the state passed a law in 2025 that required the state’s 9,000 public schools to post the Ten Commandments in classrooms.Lorne Liechty poses with a copy of the Ten Commandments in Rockwall, Texas, on Jan. 8, 2026. Bobby Sanchez for The Epoch TimesFor Martin, it was a bright spot—a swing back toward classical education rooted in Western civilization in an otherwise liberal teaching environment. Her excitement quickly turned to disappointment at the Houston-based public charter school in which she works.“I was real surprised when they didn’t jump at putting the Ten Commandments up,” she told The Epoch Times.Texas’ Senate Bill 10 has sparked the nation’s largest state-led effort to put the Ten Commandments into schools—and it is facing concerted legal challenges. A hearing on the constitutionality of the new law is scheduled before the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this month. The Ten Commandments, fundamental to both Judaism and Christianity, are credited with influencing Western values and are the basis for laws against killing, theft, adultery, and perjury.Martin believes public schools have ignored the significance of foundational works such as the Ten Commandments and their role in preserving “our democratic Republic for future generations.”She said she is retiring this month, fed up in general with a public education system that she feels has failed students. As a board member of Innovative Teachers of Texas, an alternative to liberal teacher unions, Martin hopes to spend her time establishing a Christian classical school.Christopher Rhoades, a minister and math teacher in the Alvin Independent School District south of Houston, told The Epoch Times he believes the law is a positive change but worries it could open Pandora’s box.“I mean, it definitely returns us to a point of values,” he said. “You know, my concern is always with whatever precedent is set. What does it open the door to that I wouldn’t like if someone else was in power?”Melissa Martin, a veteran educator and board member of Innovative Teachers of Texas, supports displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms, citing their influence on Western civilization. Courtesy of Jessica TuckerThe law says public schools “shall display” a poster or framed copy of the Ten Commandments in a conspicuous place in each classroom. Schools must accept donated posters that meet the law’s specifications but aren’t required to purchase them.Critics of the law argue that requiring the Ten Commandments to be hung in every classroom violates the separation of church and state and offers little educational value.Teacher Rachael Preston testified against the bill in Austin last spring.“I’m curious about how displaying the Ten Commandments ... is relevant enough to the teaching of mathematics to be displayed in a math room,” she told state lawmakers.Sarah Morrison, who taught in public school for 15 years before becoming a math instructor at Paris Junior College, told The Epoch Times via text that she believes the law is unconstitutional.“As both a Christian and an educator, I believe that requiring the Ten Commandments goes against the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and treats Christian faith as the state’s preferred religion instead of recognizing the diversity I see in my classroom every day,” she said. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and its Texas chapter quickly challenged the law by filing two lawsuits. Two federal district judges blocked the 25 school districts named in the lawsuits from displaying the posters. The civil rights organizations filed a third lawsuit in December 2025. This time, the federal class-action lawsuit names another 16 districts and seeks to block all Texas school districts from displaying the Ten Commandments.Sarah Morrison, math instructor at Paris Junior College in Texas, said she believes the law requiring the Ten Commandments to be hung in every classroom is unconstitutional. Courtesy of Skyler WilkinsLegal observers believe the issue will likely end up before the Supreme Court.A case related to a similar Louisiana law and one of the Texas cases are scheduled to be heard by the full Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Jan. 20, according to the ACLU.Wider EffortsThe Texas law is part of a larger state effort that has focused on putting God back into schools—a move grassroots conservatives in the red state applaud.Texas passed a law in 2021 requiring public schools to display the national motto, “In God We Trust.” In late 2024, the Texas State Board of Education approved the “Bluebonnet Learning” curriculum, which integrates Bible stories and Christian values into K-5 language arts lessons. In the town of Rockwall, just east of Dallas, attorney Lorne Liechty and his family purchased Ten Commandments posters for their local school district, which serves some 19,000 students. The posters were hung in classrooms before the ACLU filed its lawsuit; they now sit in storage as the issue winds its way through the courts.Liechty, who had two children attend Rockwall schools, said that besides being good rules to live by, the Ten Commandments are foundational to America and its history.Liechty, also a Rockwall County Commissioner, said prayer was allowed in school until the early 1960s; and he vividly recalls when his third-grade teacher told him it was outlawed.“The Ten Commandments, Bible verses, and prayer were taken out of the schools,” he told The Epoch Times. “So I had a chance to try and restore them. I wanted to do that.”Lawsuits Either WayThe Ten Commandments controversy has left some Texas schools in a quandary.School districts outside Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio were named in the lawsuits and have been forced to remove Ten Commandments posters.Meanwhile, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued school districts in Galveston, Leander, and Round Rock for failing to display donated posters.“America is a Christian nation, and it is imperative that we display the very values and timeless truths that have historically guided the success of our country,” Paxton said in a news release.North of Houston, Shepherd Independent School District, which serves about 2,000 students, didn’t need an extra push to post the Ten Commandments.Rebecca Nix, an administrator with Shepherd schools and a former teacher, said the posters have sparked classroom discussions.“It’s been good fodder for conversation in some of the high school English classes,” she told The Epoch Times.Read the rest here... BHP is stuck on the sidelines of copper M&A frenzy it started

BHP Group’s bold bid to buy rival Anglo American in 2024 was supposed to set it up as the clear winner in a copper boom it had long predicted. Two years later, the copper market is indeed booming. And yet the world’s biggest miner is left sitting on the sidelines of an M&A frenzy it began.People familiar with BHP’s thinking said the news that Rio Tinto Group and Glencore are closer than ever to a deal that would leapfrog BHP to become the world’s most valuable mining company has caused consternation within the Australian mining giant. However, some of the people played down the likelihood that it would respond with a move for Glencore, and said it’s watching from the sidelines for now.
