California Makes Euthanasia Law Permanent For Terminally Ill Authored by Kimberley Hayek via The Epoch Times,California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed a bill on Oct. 3 that eliminates the expiration date on the state’s End of Life Option Act, making ongoing access to assisted suicide for adults facing terminal illnesses permanent.Senate Bill 403, takes effect immediately, as it merely repeals a sunset provision in the Health and Safety Code that would have caused the law to expire in 2031.The measure, authored by State Sen. Catherine Blakespear, a Democrat from Encinitas, passed the state Legislature last month with bipartisan support. It cleared the Senate in June on a 26–6 vote and the Assembly in September by a vote of 59–12.Newsom’s signature came without public comment from his office.Under the End of Life Option Act, California residents who are at least 18 years old and diagnosed with a terminal disease expected to cause death within six months can request a prescription for a life-ending pharmaceutical agent from their physician.Patients must be mentally competent, make two verbal requests at least 48 hours apart, submit a written request witnessed by two people, and self-administer the drug. The law includes penalties for coercion or undue influence, which is treated as a felony. The original act was signed into law by then-Gov. Jerry Brown in 2015 and went into effect in June 2016, making California the fifth state to authorize assisted suicide. As of 2025, medical aid in dying (MAID), is legal in Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Vermont, Washington state, California, and the District of Columbia. In California in 2024, 1,591 individuals received prescriptions under the program, and 1,032 ingested the drugs to end their lives, according to State Health Department data. That number includes 50 people who had obtained prescriptions before 2024. The majority of participants—about 88 percent—were enrolled in hospice or palliative care at the time, and most were more than 60 years old, with cancer accounting for roughly two-thirds of cases.Earlier efforts aimed to broaden eligibility to include individuals diagnosed with certain neurodegenerative diseases even if their prognosis exceeded six months, but those efforts stalled.Currently, participation is voluntary, and many hospitals opt out. The state health department plans to launch an updated online portal for forms submission later this year to streamline reporting.Opponents of the bill, including the California Family Council, described it as a “slippery slope,” saying that it normalizes suicide. Removing the sunset clause removes one of the bill’s major safeguards, Greg Burt, vice president of the California Family Council, said in a statement.“This bill sends a chilling message that some lives are no longer worth protecting,” he said. “If we make assisted suicide permanent, we are telling the elderly, the disabled, and the depressed that their lives are expendable. That’s not compassion. That’s dehumanizing. That’s abandonment.” Tyler DurdenWed, 10/08/2025 - 22:35
Political observers and analysts were stunned on Wednesday after the Wall Street Journal released a bombshell new report about President Donald Trump's activity on his personal social media network, Truth Social. The Journal reported that Trump meant to send his September 20 post telling Attorney General Pam Bondi that the administration was "losing credibility" by not prosecuting former FBI Director James Comey as a direct message. Instead, Trump posted it publicly, which caused Bondi to move forward with prosecuting Comey, according to the report. The report led observers and analysts to conclude that Trump may be conducting state business on his social media network, which may violate federal law and be used to evade accountability for illicit acts. "I know everyone on this site cares passionately about the information security habits of top Government officials, but the President of the United States communicating with his cabinet via Truth Social direct message is both insane and a violation of the Presidential Records Act," former Obama administration staffer Dan Pfeiffer posted on X. "The president is using direct messages on a private social media app (that he owns) to communicate with his attorney general," journalist Scott Nover posted on X. "There's zero chance that this administration is preserving any of their communications," attorney Kevin Baum posted on X."Mostly i just can’t believe he uses truth social to DM people," former Obama staffer Tommy Vietor posted on X. "Must be convenient for all the foreign intel services." "Pundit accountability: I said it was just Trump being weird and not an errant DM," ex-GOP strategist Tim Miller posted on X. "He’s even stupider than a TDS inflicted podcaster realizes. We regret the error."

On September 29, 2025, the US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) issued an interim final rule (IFR) that substantially expands the scope of US export controls, imposing significant new compliance obligations on exporters. Effective September 29, 2025, the rule extends license requirements applicable to entities on the Entity List and the Military End-User (MEU) List to any company that is 50 percent or more owned, directly or indirectly, by one or more of those listed parties. This change closes what BIS described as a “significant loophole” and aligns the Export Administration Regulations (EAR) more closely with the long-standing “Fifty Percent Rule” maintained by the Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC). For exporters, this means that simply screening transaction parties against US government restricted party lists is no longer sufficient. Companies now have an affirmative obligation to conduct due diligence on the... Read the complete article here...Copyright © 2025, Hunton Andrews Kurth LLP. All Rights Reserved.

Gold bulls have been waiting a lifetime for a market like this. It's been an astonishing run to $3950 from $3350 in just six weeks. The pieces were long in place with recklace fiscal spending and a breakdown in the global order but the final triggers were:Big US non-farm payrolls revisions, leading to pricing for a dovish FedTrump firing the head of the BLS and attempting to fire Lisa CookIt can basically be summed up as: We're going to run it hot, on both the fiscal and monetary side. Combine that with US isolationism and unpredictable comments about US military power and the appetite for central banks and investors to hold US dollars has crumbled. Instead, the world is turning to gold.Today gold is up another $67 to as high as $3956. It's the first time above $3950 and all eyes are now on $4000, which will assuredly trigger some profit taking. Both the commodity and commodity producers have surged in the past six weeks and investors are looking for value.Looking through some TD decks at the moment, miners aren't pricing cheap, which is what you'd usually expect in a massive commdity move (though those are usually cyclically drive). Here are FCF yields for the top gold producers on 2026 numbers at spot (albeit Friday's spot):AEM 6.1%B 8.1%KGC 8.6%NEM 7.0%Even going down to intermediate and junior producers, it's a struggle to find free-cash-flow yields in the teens, though some are certainly in mine-development cycles. There are some better EV/EBITDA and P/NAV numbers but those are problematic at the best of times. Leverage is low in the industry as it's been capital constrained for some time. In general, M&A kicks off at this point so takeover targets are a good place to start but one is Lundin Gold, which has a prolific mine in Ecuador but it's already had a sensational run.All that to say there isn't a lot of low-hanging fruit here, though all the valuations certainly look much better if you're betting on $5000 gold. Marcos del Mazo / LightRocket via Getty ImagesA bold plan to power solar farms at night using sunlight reflected from space is placing a California startup on a collision course with the global astronomical community. Reflect Orbital has requested an FCC license to launch up to 4,000 satellites into orbit by 2030, significantly increasing the amount of clean, renewable energy that solar farms can produce. The project has already attracted serious financial backing, including Sequoia Capital and tech billionaire Baiju Bhatt. However, the project has drawn the ire of astronomers, who warn that the “blindingly bright” light emitted by the fleet of satellites could significantly impact their work, leaving them unable to properly study the night sky. “Astronomers are certainly concerned about this,” said University of Washington researcher Meredith Rawls, who added that the vast amounts of satellites currently in orbit have already negatively impacted astronomical images. Scientists have also warned that additional light pollution caused by the satellites could disrupt the behavior of nocturnal species such as moths and bats, arguing that the environmental impact of the satellites could soon offset the climate benefits. It is not yet known whether the FCC will grant Reflect Orbital a license.Read it at BloombergRead more at The Daily Beast.
