China Envisions 'Dry Canal' To Compete With Panama Canal

China Envisions 'Dry Canal' To Compete With Panama Canal Authored by James Gorrie via The Epoch Times (emphasis ours),In response to the Trump administration’s new U.S. policy of reasserting control over the Panama Canal, China and Brazil are exploring the possibility of building a transcontinental railway to provide an advantageous alternative to the Panama Canal. The proposed rail system would potentially run from Brazil’s Atlantic coast, perhaps Ilhéus, Bahia, to Peru’s Pacific coast at Chancay.Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (L) talks to Chinese Ambassador to Brazil Zhu Qingqiao at the Palacio do Planalto in Brasilia on Feb. 3, 2023. Sergio Lima/AFP via Getty ImagesThe project, known as the Central Bi-Oceanic Railway Corridor (CRBC), has been in consideration since at least 2017. Other proposed projects of a similar nature and objectives have been considered since at least 2013. There are other terms applied to the transoceanic railway project, but essentially, the system would cut across the Amazon rainforest and go over—and likely tunnel through—the Andes mountain range, linking Atlantic and Pacific port facilities. Many Obstacles and Risks to OvercomeOf course, there’s often a wide gap between planning a project and actually doing it successfully. There are certainly formidable obstacles that would have to be overcome for the project to move forward to completion. The geographic and topographic challenges are considerable. Clearing a path through the Amazon rainforest or tunneling through the Andes mountains aren’t easy engineering feats. There would also be legal challenges over land rights and environmental resistance to the project and against the development of the necessary supporting infrastructure along the way. The initial costs incurred by each country would also be a significant challenge, as would be establishing a sustainable debt service and maintaining the political will to stick to the plan when these and other obstacles arise. The Trade Advantages Would Be SignificantAlthough it would be a complex, multi-year project with significant costs and engineering challenges, there would also be several advantages in doing so. For one, proponents estimate that it would cut shipping time to Asia by 10 to 12 days. With shipping costs rising and economies struggling, those factors aren’t easily ignored.View of the Chancay "megaport" in the small town of Chancay, 78 kilometers north of the Peruvian capital Lima, on Oct. 29, 2024. The port will be inaugurated on Nov. 14, 2024, by Peruvian President Dina Boluarte and Chinese leader Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Lima. Cris Bouroncle/AFP via Getty ImagesBut it’s not just a railway system that would be built. The system will be a key addition to the deep-water port that China is building in Chancay, Peru, on the Pacific Ocean. Deep-water ports enable the largest cargo ships and container vessels to dock and transfer their goods quickly and easily, without the complications of moving through various locks and channels that come with relying on the passage through a very crowded and slow Panama Canal transit.A similar deep-water port would be constructed on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, with both ports providing a much smoother and more economical way to move goods around the world.Much More Than Just a RailroadChinese planners envision the CRBC as a comprehensive project that serves the entire trade and transportation cycle. This “dual-track” logistics corridor—combining port infrastructure, rail links, logistics hubs, and industrial zones to permit transit from Pacific to Atlantic (or vice versa)—could well prove to reimagine and redirect global and regional trade flows. It would also reduce the canal’s chokepoint dependencies and potential vulnerabilities. Compared to all of the benefits the proposed railway, the Panama Canal would become seen as more burdensome—not less—to global trade, rendering it a less-desirable, more costly and time-consuming option. The transformative potential of the CRBC project cannot be overstated. It would be a continuation of China’s role as a major player in ports, dams, energy, and other infrastructure in the region.Gaining Strategic Regional Leverage While Avoiding US ControlFrom China’s perspective, the proposed transcontinental rail system is a way to minimize or even eliminate U.S. dominance of interoceanic trading in the region. The proposed overland route would significantly reduce Beijing’s vulnerability to U.S. control, blockades, and trade leverage over canal access. That alone is a compelling reason to pursue the project. But developing an economically superior alternative to the Panama Canal also gives Beijing more leverage and influence over their Latin American trading partners. That influence would largely come at the expense of U.S. influence, thereby diminishing American power in the region. It would also add proof of concept and gravitas to China’s Global South initiative and help expand the BRICS currency influence and use in the Americas. All of these factors would give China added leverage over its Latin American partners. Those countries helping to build and host parts of the railway system will certainly gain strategic importance. At the same time, their dependency on Chinese capital, products, and technical assistance would expand, allowing Beijing to embed itself into those regional governments and economies more deeply.Furthermore, the development of deep-water ports in both Brazil and Peru will give the Chinese regime safe havens to park its rapidly expanding navy, and the pretext to establish and maintain a large and adversarial naval warship presence in America’s backyard. A regional threat on such a scale would have been unthinkable even a few years ago. It could reasonably be compared to the re-colonization of the region.A Multidimensional, Long-Term ImpactBeijing’s plans for the CRBC are as expansive as they are threatening to U.S. regional hegemony and beyond. The resulting impact of the CRBC would be transformational in a multidimensional context, and for the long term. Beijing would reasonably be able to shape trade terms, shipping standards, customs operations, and logistics norms in the region, and much of the rest of the world. If Beijing succeeds in its CBRC plans, it could elevate the blighted Belt and Road Initiative up to a new level and lift China to the pinnacle of global power. The United States, on the other hand, would find itself out-hustled, out-traded, out-funded, and out-gunned by China in the Americas.Let’s hope that the United States has plans to preempt or prevent China’s big move in America’s backyard.Views expressed in this article are opinions of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times or ZeroHedge. Japan's Rengo union demands 5% pay hike for 2026 to beat inflation

Japan's largest labour union, Rengo, announced Thursday it will demand a wage hike of at least 5% in next spring's "shunto" negotiations, maintaining its 2025 target to sustain momentum against persistent inflation. The Japanese Trade Union Confederation's policy aims for an overall pay hike of 5% or higher, which includes a base-pay rise of 3% or more. The ultimate goal is to achieve a 1% real (inflation-adjusted) wage increase, a barometer of consumer purchasing power that aligns with the government's target.A key focus of the 2026 talks will be narrowing the pay gap between large and small firms. Rengo is encouraging unions at small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which employ about 70% of Japan's workforce, to demand an even higher goal of 6% or more. The confederation also said it will seek a minimum hourly wage of 1,300 yen ($8) or higher, a 50 yen increase from this year's demand. This strategy builds on significant recent gains. According to Rengo's final tally for the 2025 negotiations, Japanese firms agreed to an average wage increase of 5.25%, the second consecutive year the hike exceeded 5%. ---This aggressive wage demand from Rengo keeps significant pressure on the Bank of Japan. Markets will see this as a key driver of domestic, demand-led inflation, increasing the probability of further BOJ rate hikes in 2026. This outlook is bullish for the Japanese Yen (JPY) but could be a mixed signal for the Nikkei, as investors must weigh the benefit of stronger consumer spending against the headwind of squeezed corporate profit margins and higher borrowing costs. Norway testing homomorphic encryption with Mobai for biometric template protection

Norwegian banks reported losses of 930 million Norwegian crowns (US$92.7 million) related to financial fraud in 2023 and the problem has only become worse with the arrival of AI tools that automate the work of fraudsters. To increase identity protection, the Scandinavian nation is currently examining Mobai’s homomorphic encryption for protecting biometric templates used in the country’s banking industry.A spin-off of Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), the company has been working on strengthening face biometrics systems’ security for Norwegian banks since 2021. Earlier this year, the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (NDPA) published a report exploring Mobai’s technology as well as key legal and privacy challenges related to the use of technologies that protect face biometrics templates.Mobai and the NDPA presented their work at a webinar on Wednesday organized by the European Association for Biometrics (EAB).The facial biometrics company has developed the template protection technology as a strong digital face verification method that reduces the risk of identity theft of digital accounts and biometric data. Mobai is calling the biometric verification and encryption solution SALT.Homomorphic encryption allows computations to be performed on encrypted data without first having to decrypt the data. An advantage is that it allows analyzing sensitive data without compromising privacy. The technology doesn't expose data but still allows the bank to do an identity proofing in an online session using data from a national identity document such as a passport. The cryptography works in the following way: The bank collects a selfie image of a customer and the image is processed into a biometric template and encrypted. The encrypted data is used to perform a match with the ID document. The bank is the only entity that can decrypt the decision and thereby authenticate the user, explains Petter Taugbøl, vice president of business development at Mobai.“In practical terms, this means that a third party, typically a cloud provider, can process sensitive data without ever seeing the underlying data and produce results which they don't have access to either,” he says. The project is funded by the Research Council of Norway and involves electronic identity system BankID and one of Norwegian largest savings banks Sparebank1 Østlandet as industry partners. KU Leuven joined as an academic partner. An important objective has been to analyze whether new and enhanced privacy technologies could change what are acceptable methods for privacy protection, from a legal perspective, Taugbøl explains.“By transforming biometric data into encrypted templates could we kind of de-risk or reclassify biometric data in the legal sense from sensitive personal data to maybe personal data, and thereby enable the use of face recognition on a different legal basis?” he says.As a sub-vendor to the eID provider, Mobai tested its technology as part of a Regulatory Sandbox, designed for exploring issues where there are few legal precedents. The project started in May 2023, and the report launched in January of 2025.“This has been a long project, and the reasoning for that is that these kinds of projects are challenging,” says NDPA’s Special Advisor, Eirik Guldbransen. The project should solve a very real world problem. Banks usually require customers to come to physical offices where they take their photo which is then compared with an image in their national ID document.A similar solution is implemented in mobile banking where customers take a selfie image though their smartphone and then provide a scan of their passport, according to Dag-Arne Hoberg, senior project manager at Sparebank1 Østlandet.Mobai is arguing that performing biometric processing solely on devices such as personal computers or mobile phones presents security challenges. Many ID solutions confirm access to the device rather than actually identifying the physical person, adds Guldbransen.“Biometrics can be copied and stolen,” he says. “That is something that we need to acknowledge and we should acknowledge that we need to perhaps look at better solutions than we have today.”Given the computational demands of homomorphic encryption, Mobai believes that centralized processing is best for ensuring trustworthy face matching results. In contrast, a decentralized approach would leave service providers, like BankID, reliant on platform owners' security measures.Mobai and the NPDA have identified the next key questions that the agency will have to tackle: Assessing the legal status of facial images and protected templates in an AI-based solution for verification and the technical security measures for storing protected templates that would be used by the AI and facial images for training purposes. This month, the company won an additional US$1.2 million grant to research new methods for secure credential binding in digital wallets.More work also needs to be done in other areas, according to webinar participants.“The solution to fraud is complex, requiring information sharing, eID solutions, biometric technology, fraud detection systems and general increased understanding in society to prevent fraud attempts,” says Hoberg.Template protection requirements are built into the EU’s GDPR, and the topic has caught the interest of diverse parties from humanitarian organizations to research and innovation groups.

The Parties Know They're Losing, That's Why They're Redrawing Districts

The Parties Know They're Losing, That's Why They're Redrawing Districts Authored by Lura Forcum & Brett Loyd via RealClearPolitics,Partisan affiliation in the U.S. has sharply declined over the past two decades. Today, only 28% of Americans identify with either the Republican or Democratic party, down from 34% in 2004. This drop in party loyalty helps explain the rise of the independent voter, who now make up 43% of the electorate. But just as the electorate becomes less partisan, the political system is becoming more so – thanks to recent gerrymandering in Texas, California, and potentially many more states. It’s no wonder so many Americans are walking away from the parties that have spent more energy protecting their turf than earning voters’ trust. The overlooked plurality has woken up to the absurdity of a political system that no longer serves them. But outrage alone won’t fix what’s broken. It’s time to get organized. The independent movement offers a way forward: candidates and voters who believe politics should serve the public good, not the party line. It’s a movement grounded in accountability and common sense and a coalition of voters tired of being divided and ready to reclaim a system that should have belonged to them all along. But the two parties spend more time dismissing these voters as uninformed or spoilers than they do trying to court them. And their latest tactic for maintaining control is to gerrymander districts to insulate themselves from the effects of their toxic brands.Partisan mapmakers try to “pack” as many voters of the opposing parties into districts they already control, leaving fewer opposition voters in surrounding districts. They also “crack” districts by spreading opposition voters over as wide an area as possible, making it unlikely they can form a majority anywhere. This gamesmanship reveals the two-party duopoly’s weakness. The fewer true believers each side has, the more they must rely on engineered maps instead of energized bases. And aside from being cynical, gerrymandering turns up the temperature of political acrimony in multiple ways. First, gerrymandering not only influences who wins an election, but it can also determine who runs. When district lines are drawn to guarantee one party’s victory, the real contest happens in the primary, when that party’s candidate is selected. When general elections are neck and neck, candidates play to the middle, appealing to moderates and independents, resulting in a candidate that is more balanced and appealing to voters with varying political beliefs. In primary races, on the other hand, only the most partisan voters tend to show up, rewarding candidates who play to partisan extremes instead. By making general elections a foregone conclusion, gerrymandering practices remove this check on extremism. At the same time, partisan redistricting makes many people feel powerless. Gerrymandering makes it harder for voters to give feedback to their representatives, since districts are increasingly unresponsive to voter preferences. When voters are denied responsive representation, frustration builds. For decades, dissatisfaction with the two parties has manifested as political disengagement, with fewer Americans turning out to vote than in most other developed countries. But frustration can also lead to transformative change when channeled into civic action: voting, volunteering and organizing. While we’d like to see politically homeless voters supporting independent candidates, they can also have a tremendous corrective impact on the political system by split-ticket and swing voting. When independents cast split tickets or swing their support between parties, they reclaim their right to choose political leaders who best represent their values and priorities. They vote for ideas and solutions – instead of being forced to vote according to party affiliation – while reminding candidates that they need to earn voter loyalty. Consider the great movements of America’s past, like abolition, civil rights, and women’s suffrage, which turned public discontent into lasting reform. Dissatisfaction can lead to a powerful opening once people decide that enough is enough. The independent movement’s strength lies in the very people the system tries to sideline: citizens who demand that political leaders behave with decency, who still believe in their right to say no to ineffective and unresponsive elected officials, and who believe in the American experiment. If gerrymandering is the parties’ last defense, civic engagement is the people’s first. The very act of gerrymandering is a public admission that the two parties cannot win on a level playing field. It reveals their fear of a nonpartisan electorate and their complete dependence on a rigged system. The good news for independents is that these maneuvers fuel voters’ collective frustration, providing a political opening to finally end the two-party stranglehold. From local offices to Congress, independent candidates can represent a new era of politics, one where voters choose their leaders, not the other way around. Tech sector rebounds: Microsoft leads, while Netflix dives

Sector OverviewToday's US stock market presents a mixed landscape, with some sectors showing resilience while others falter. As depicted in the stock market heatmap:📈 Technology Sector: The technology sector shows a notable rebound driven by a 1.01% rise in Microsoft (MSFT). However, Oracle (ORCL) faces a decline of 1.22%, reflecting mixed sentiments within high-tech stocks.📉 Semiconductors: The semiconductor sector faces a slight downturn, with Nvidia (NVDA) dropping by 0.57% and AMD by 2.80%. This hints at caution among investors amid potential global supply chain disruptions.🚀 Healthcare Gains: The healthcare sector witnesses positive movements, particularly with Eli Lilly (LLY) up by 0.53% and Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) gaining 0.67%, reflecting investor confidence in drug manufacturers.🛒 Consumer Cyclical: A challenging day for consumer cyclical stocks as Amazon (AMZN) declines by 2.09%, and Tesla (TSLA) is down by 2.12%. These movements may signal investor caution in retail and automotive sectors.Market Mood and TrendsThe overall market mood today veers toward cautious optimism. While certain segments like technology and healthcare experience growth, consumer cyclical and semiconductors reflect concerns potentially tied to market-specific news or economic outlooks.Netflix (NFLX) sees a significant drop of 9.48%, weighing heavily on the communication services sector, potentially driven by disappointing subscriber growth or competition fears.Strategic RecommendationsInvestors should consider a diversified approach amidst today's market flux. While technology and healthcare exhibit strong resilience, the consumer cyclical and semiconductor sectors demand careful observation due to volatility:Diversify into tech giants like MSFT, which currently show momentum and potential for steady returns amid industry fluctuations.Monitor healthcare stocks, particularly those showing consistent gains, as they might provide stability in uncertain market conditions.Exercise caution with consumer cyclical, considering dipping stocks like AMZN and TSLA, and reassess holdings in semiconductors pending further clarity on supply chains.Engage with real-time market insights and trends at InvestingLive.com to make informed investment decisions. Gold is now more than $100 off the lows

Sometimes trading is nothing more than watching the big figures.Gold was flushed lower yesterday in US trading and that continued today early in Asia. When Tokyo markets opened, a switch flipped and gold fell by more than $100.Gold dropped as low as $4005 but bids at the figure caught the falling knife in a quick bounce to $4030. From there, a steady stream of bids arrived and gold is now down just $12 on the day. It's going to be a harrowing one for the rest of the day and we could test $4000 again in US trading. If gold can hold near current levels and finish above $4100, I'd expect more buyers to step in tomorrow.
