Just a little more than a month after the top exec for HBO Max mused that the service is “way underpriced,” the streamer is following through with a price hike for each of its three tiers. Starting today for new subscribers, the price of HBO Max Premium will go up to $22.99, a $2-a-month increase, while the annual rate for Premium will rise to $229.99, up $20 a year. The step-down HBO Max Standard plan is also getting a price hike to $18.49 a month, up $1.50/month, with the annual Standard price going up to $184.99, a $15 annual increase. Finally, HBO Max Basic with Ads is now $10.99, up a dollar a month, while the annual rate for that plan is getting hiked to $109.99 a year, up $10 annually. Existing HBO Max monthly subscribers will see the price increases take effect on their next bills after November 20, 2025, while current subscribers on annual plans will stick with the previous rate until their plans expire, according to Variety. HBO Max’s Premium tier gives you four simultaneous 4K UHD streams with Dolby Atmos when available, plus up to 100 downloads at a time. The Standard plan serves up two 1080p streams with 30 downloads at once, while Basic with Ads offers two ad-supported 1080p streams without the downloads. It’s been roughly 16 months since the last time HBO Max raised its prices. At that time—when HBO Max will still being called just “Max”—both the ad-free tiers got price hikes, but the with-ads tier remained unchanged. While the latest HBO Max price hike arrived without warning for new customers, the top executive for the streamer telegraphed the move last month. “The fact that this is quality—and that’s true across our company, motion picture, TV production and streaming quality—we all think that gives us a chance to raise [the] price,” Warner Bros. Discover CEO David Zaslav said at the time. “We think we’re way underpriced. We’re going to take our time.” Apparently, Zaslav’s promise to “take our time” meant only a little more than a month. HBO Max has seen plenty of changes since its previous price hike back in June 2024. First came the decision in February to pare back the offers of HBO Max’s with-ads tier, with subscribers to the plan losing access to the Bleacher Report Sports add-on as well as streaming CNN content. Then came the name change from “Max” back to HBO Max, which happened this past summer. The move effectively undid Warner Bros. Discovery’s ill-advised “Max” rebranding of the service, which only lasted a couple of years. Finally, HBO Max Standard and Premium subscribers learned they would also lose access to streaming CNN news starting November 17, thereby making way for the launch (or re-launch) next week of a new CNN streaming service.

A few weeks ago, over 100 Portland elementary students had a “wheely” special guest star escort them home from school: Benson Boone.Boone — who shot to fame with hits such as ‘Beautiful Things’ and ‘Mystical Magical’ — is known for his electric performance antics, especially his spectacular backflips. Turns out, he’s pretty fun on a bike, too.“Seeing his interactions brought me to tears,” says Sam Balto, a physical education teacher and co-founder of Bike Bus World. “He was asking kids’ names, he was taking selfies with them. They were asking him questions, and he was answering them all while riding a bike.”Balto adds, “He just had an awesome attitude and was super present, singing along with the kids and really just taking in the experience.”Benson Boone took to the streets to help kids ride home safely. Balto co-founded Bike Bus World “to support more people starting bike buses, to sustain them, to help grow the community and help them advocate for better infrastructure and better funding.” There are bike buses in 30 states, and over 400 around the world.But a bike bus is about more than a mode of transportation. It’s a way of life.“Music’s a big part of it. It just creates a really fun and joyful environment,” says Balto. “Bubbles are very popular too.”Both were present on the kids’ ride with Boone.“Two weeks before the ride, we made a video asking Benson Boone to ride with us,” Balto explains. Boone was scheduled to perform just over 3 miles from the kids’ school that day at the Moda Center in Portland. Balto was hoping he had time before the concert to spend with the kids.“It got 1000s of likes and 1000s of people tagged him on Instagram and TikTok, and a week and a half later, his manager reached out to me, asking for some details about the ride,” Balto says.Everyone was hoping that Boone would join the ride to school on the morning of Friday, October 4, but Balto had to explain to the kids that the timing just didn’t work out.But then Balto heard from Boone’s manager again.Is there anything better than scream-singing “Beautiful Things” on a sunny fall afternoon? He threw his hand up in the air to wave. Balto appreciates the attention that celebrities bring to his nonprofit by joining in.“Parenting is a really hard job, and we don’t get a ton of support from society,” Balto says. “Bike bus is this great tool to resew the social fabric that is torn more than we would like to admit.”He adds, “I don’t know if you’ve ever seen these soul crushing school car lines, but we should be doing everything we can to move away from them and to move towards movement and community.”Parents who have heeded the warning of Jonathan Haidt in “The Anxious Generation” have been looking for ways to increase their children’s independence in a safe way, and bike buses do just that.“I always say there’s this narrative of kids just want to stay at home playing video games on the couch,” he says. “And I really feel like that could be nothing farther from the truth. Kids want to be outside and want to be with their friends, but the environment we’ve created for them is not conducive for that.”He continues, “We see more and more kids riding on non-bike bus days, recreating the freedom that we had in the 80s but somehow lost.”Boone stuck around to take selfies with students.
