Microsoft pushes huge Copilot update with features like Clippy 2.0

Now that Microsoft is not-quite-forcing you to upgrade to Windows 11, it’s time for them to take break, let you settle in, lay off some of the heavy-handed marketing that’s been the company’s staple for the last two years... Ha, just kidding. They’re actually burying users under more Copilot features and integrations. Try to contain your excitement. In a sprawling marketing post yesterday, Microsoft announced a bunch of new features for Copilot... not a single one of which requires a laptop or desktop that meets the Copilot+ requirements. “Copilot now connects you to yourself, to others, and to the tools you use every day. It’s there for you, helps you stay organized, and even supports your health,” says the blog post from Microsoft’s CEO of AI.Here’s a breakdown of all the new and updated stuff announced:Mico, Microsoft’s AI companion character: It’s Clippy 2.0. And the new video showing off the character, which is supposed to be conversational, has no audio. What? Thankfully, Mico is only an “optional visual presence”; you can still use Copilot in its standard text-based interface. Mico is currently rolling out in the US, though I haven’t seen it in action yet. (Oh, by the way. It’s called Mico because it’s an interface for Microsoft Copilot. Riveting.)Copilot Mode in Edge: Microsoft is pushing the Copilot integration to compete with new “agentic” browsers like Comet. Copilot will be able to “read” the pages you’re looking at and remember your internet history, in a method that whiffs of Recall on Copilot+ PCs. Don’t everyone jump at once to give Microsoft even more of your web browsing information.Copilot Groups: Up to 32 users can join in a Copilot LLM session at once for collaboration.Long-term memory: Copilot’s LLM can now “remember” important information you offer up to it, mirroring features from other “AI” chatbots like ChatGPT (which forms the basis for much of Copilot’s functionality) and Google Gemini. Users can update, edit, or delete specific conversations in their history, allowing a measure of control over what Copilot remembers.Integration with Google services: Copilot can now get into your Google account to “see” Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Calendar, something that was already announced. In Deep Research mode, it will offer up more insight based on recent activity.Copilot for health: Microsoft promises some more credible search results, including “sources like Harvard Health.” It’ll also help you find the correct local doctors based on your health needs, including location and language. All of these things are, of course, completely impossible to do with a standard search engine, like the one Microsoft has been making for a couple of decades.I’ve yet to see anything in Copilot that makes me want to leave it running on my PC, much less pay $20 per month for a Microsoft 365 subscription to get at its more potent capabilities. But if you want to try this stuff out, Microsoft says that all the above capabilities are rolling out in the US now, with the UK, Canada, “and beyond” coming later.

Stocks rebound as tech and healthcare provide a boost

Sector OverviewThe stock market heatmap reveals a day of varied performances across sectors, with technology and healthcare sectors emerging as the clear winners. The broader market sentiment today leans positive, given the upswings observed in key areas.📈 Technology Sector: The tech sector showcases notable strength. Software-infrastructure players like Oracle (ORCL) surged by 2.24%. Broadcom (AVGO) also posted gains of 1.30%, signaling robust investor interest in tech infrastructure.📉 Telecommunications: However, the telecommunications sector struggled, as evidenced by T-Mobile (TMUS) and Verizon (VZ) dropping by 3.31% and 3.15%, respectively, pulling the sector down amid broader concerns.🏦 Financial Sector: The financial outlook displayed mixed signals. JPMorgan Chase (JPM) saw a modest increase of 0.27%, whereas diversifying asset managers like Blackstone (BX) fell sharply by 4.94%.🏥 Healthcare Sector: Positivity radiated from healthcare with Eli Lilly (LLY) climbing by 0.59%, providing a support cushion to the broader market dynamics.⚖️ Consumer Goods: Tesla (TSLA) weighed heavily with a plunge of 3.38%, which dragged down overall consumer cyclical stocks as investors reacted to ongoing production challenges.Market Mood and TrendsToday’s market mood is cautiously optimistic, influenced by selective sector performance and contrasting narratives in consumer goods versus technology. The positive rally in tech and healthcare has infused confidence but remains checked by downturns in telecommunications and select consumer stocks.Investors seem to be calibrating their focus towards defensible stocks within technology and healthcare, leading to selective optimism post-latest updates.Strategic RecommendationsGiven today’s market mix, investors might consider rebalancing portfolios to leverage strengths in tech and healthcare sectors.Exploit emerging opportunities within technology, particularly in software and chip manufacturing, as tech firms are showing resilience.Consider fortifying positions in healthcare providers, where investor sentiment remains bullish amidst steady gains.Stay cautious with telecommunications and auto manufacturers as these areas face potential headwinds expected to continue. As market dynamics continue to evolve, maintaining diversified investments may provide beneficial stability. Keynote speaker Tom Kemp, executive director of the California Privacy Protection Agency (CPPA) emphasized that companies can't afford to wait for the next wave of privacy laws, but must prepare now — by operationalizing transparency, strengthening data governance, and automating compliance tasks. Uber will pay drivers $4,000 to switch to an EV

Uber Green is rebranding to Uber Electric, and to coincide with the name switch — a move designed to make it clearer for Uber users preferring to hail zero-emissions rides — the company will incentivise its drivers to swap their current vehicle for an EV by way of a $4,000 grant. According to Uber’s numbers, there are currently more than 200,000 EVs on its global network, and drivers are switching to electric up to 5x faster than regular motorists in the US, Canada and Europe.Uber’s carrot for drivers is particularly timely given that President Trump’s "Big, Beautiful Bill" recently wiped out the federal tax credit on used EVs, which was worth (at its maximum value) the same amount as its new "Go Electric" EV grant. The grant automatically qualifies drivers in New York City, California, Colorado, and Massachusetts to receive $4,000 when they switch to an EV. Grants are available for both new and used electric vehicles, and Uber drivers nationwide can also get $1,000 when they purchase any new or used EV through TrueCar.Uber has also announced that it's rolling out its battery-aware matching (BAM) feature to EVs made by Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Volkswagen, and Mercedes-Benz in 25 countries including the US and Canada. This allows drivers to connect their vehicle to the Driver app, and will subsequently only receive ride requests that they are able to fulfill with their remaining range at the time. Uber said that 49 percent of non-EV drivers on its platform are put off switching to an EV due to battery-related concerns, which the expansion of BAM should help alleviate. The Uber Electric rebrand follows Uber transitioning Uber Green to fully electric in the US earlier this year, where previously it has consisted of a mix of hybrids and all-electric vehicles. Riders are also being enticed to seek EV drivers, with Uber offering them 20 percent off (up to $8) their next electric ride with code GOELECTRIC20, which is valid for a week. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/evs/uber-will-pay-drivers-4000-to-switch-to-an-ev-144704532.html?src=rss

Apple Vision Pro Now Made in Vietnam

Apple's new Vision Pro with the M5 chip and the Dual Knit headband are assembled in Vietnam, Bloomberg reports. The original Vision Pro with the M2 chip was manufactured in China by Luxshare, which also makes some AirPods models. The move demonstrates Apple's increasing shift away from China. While it still makes most iPhones in the country, many of its other devices sold in the United States are being produced elsewhere.Apple's upcoming wave of new smart home devices, including a smart home display, indoor security camera, and tabletop robot, will also be made in Vietnam, according to Bloomberg. With the iPhone 17 lineup, most models sold in the United States are made in India. Most AirPods, Apple Watches, iPads, and HomePods are now made in Vietnam. An increasing number of Macs are now made in Thailand and Malaysia. Earlier this year, Apple announced plans to make the cover glass for all iPhones and Apple Watches in the United States. Hyundai, Kia to take fresh crack at Japan market, dubbed ‘graveyard for imported vehicles’

South Korea’s two largest automakers, Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Corp., are making a bold push into the Japanese market, long been dubbed a “graveyard for imported vehicles,” with their latest electric models. The two automaking units of Hyundai Motor Group, which also owns premium brand Genesis, are participating in this year’s Japan Mobility Show, which opens on Oct. 30.It marks the first time the sister firms will appear together at Japan’s premier motor exhibition, in a coordinated effort to challenge the dominance of local automakers such as Toyota, Honda and Nissan through electric vehicles.Hyundai Motor Group is zeroing in on what it sees as the Achilles’ heel of Japanese carmakers: their sluggish transition to electrification. Both Hyundai and Kia will unveil all-electric and zero-emission models as they look to carve out niches in Japan’s still-nascent EV market.Their challenge, however, is China’s BYD Co., whose aggressive expansion and marketing blitz have already made it a formidable contender in Japan.INSTER, INSTEROID, NEXO, PV5Hyundai will premiere The All-New NEXO, its updated hydrogen fuel-cell SUV, at the Japan Mobility Show. The company will also showcase its flagship EV, the IONIQ 5; the Inster Cross, a variant of the compact crossover city car Inster, known in Korea as the Casper; and a concept Inster model, Insteroid.Kia, meanwhile, will take the wraps off its first purpose-built vehicle, the PV5, aimed at Japan’s commercial EV market. The model will make its global debut at the show before its official launch in Japan next year, followed by a larger electric van, the PV7, in 2027.All vehicles presented by Hyundai and Kia at the event will be electric, underscoring their shared strategy to avoid direct confrontation with Japan’s well-entrenched internal combustion engine segment and instead compete where Japanese incumbents remain vulnerable, sources said. HYUNDAI’S RENEWED BID IN JAPANIn 2022, the Korean automaker said it was re-entering the Japanese car market after a 12-year hiatus, starting with the IONIQ 5 and the NEXO.Hyundai made inroads into Japan in 2001 but gave up its passenger car business in 2009 due to weak sales there. The Inster, or the Casper Electric, sold via Hyundai’s online platform in Japan, has shown strong traction among Japanese consumers.Hyundai sold 759 vehicles under its brand in Japan from January through September, surpassing last year’s full-year total of 618. The company’s best-seller is the Inster Cross, which fits Japan’s small-car preference and lower tax categories, Hyundai officials said.BYD’S JAPANESE OFFENSIVEStill, Hyundai’s market share in Japan’s EV segment remains in the low single digits, squeezed between local manufacturers and fast-rising Chinese and US rivals.According to market tracker SNE Research, Nissan led Japan’s EV market in the first half of 2025 with 11,695 units, accounting for about 40% of the total 29,857 sales. Following Nissan were Tesla with 5,542 units, Mitsubishi with 4,793 units, and BYD with 1,409 units. At the same Tokyo mobility show, BYD plans to exhibit a full line-up, including the Sealion 6 DM-i hybrid, the Atto 3 crossover and the Yangwang U9 supercar under its luxury brand. The Chinese automaker has also struck a deal with Japanese retail giant Aeon to expand its sales network, targeting around 30 outlets nationwide. It is also preparing to launch a compact EV next year, meeting Japan’s regulations and consumer preferences.JAPAN’S INCUMBENTS STRIKE BACKJapan’s traditional automakers are not standing idle. Toyota will unveil a new orange Century Coupe positioned above its luxury Lexus range, starting at around 25 million yen ($164,780), along with at least three concept models, including a six-wheel Lexus prototype.Honda will showcase its upcoming Honda 0 Series EVs, set for launch next year, and its HondaJet Elite II business aircraft.Analysts said the competition underscores a shifting dynamic in Japan’s auto market, long a fortress for domestic brands but now facing disruption from Korea’s and China’s EV ambitions. For Hyundai and Kia, success in Japan will be more than just a sales milestone: it will mark a symbolic breakthrough in one of the world’s most insular car markets, they said.On Monday, Hyundai Motor was named Korea’s top-performing company in Time magazine’s annual ranking of the World’s Best Companies this year. Hyundai ranked 33rd on the list, beating Toyota, which ranked 48th.By Jung-Eun [email protected] Nam edited this article.
