Ken Cedeno/ReutersPresident Donald Trump doubled down on his administration’s brazen attacks against free speech in a Friday afternoon press conference, telling reporters that publishing negative stories about him is “really illegal.”Asked by a reporter whether he sees a difference between “cancel culture and consequence culture,” the president called it “a trick question,” noting “I’m a very strong person for free speech.”The way Trump sees it, the math just doesn’t add up. Referring to his victory in the 2024 election as “a landslide times two” (right after calling it a “landside”), the president doesn’t see how a person could have the “level of popularity or voter support as I did in the last election, and yet 97 percent of the people are against me in the sense of the newscasts are against me.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

First lady Melania Trump has directed her attorneys to take swift action against any platform or person that publishes “falsehoods” or “defamatory” information about her when it comes to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News. The campaign has resulted in several recent retractions and apologies. President Donald Trump said his wife has been “very upset” about any claims related to Epstein that “demean” her and are not cleared up.While the West Wing is mostly in a defensive posture when navigating the Epstein controversy, the East Wing has had a more direct approach to any material that mentions Melania Trump in the context of Epstein. The strategy stands out in what has otherwise been a reserved posture from the first lady and her team, who have been more selective about what they engage on compared to their first term in office. Most recently, the first lady on Monday posted an updated apology and retraction from The Daily Beast on her X account, which was later amplified by the White House and its allies. The Daily Beast retracted a story headlined “Melania Trump ‘Very Involved’ in Epstein Scandal: Author,” based on an interview with Michael Wolff, who claimed that Epstein was involved in introducing her to President Donald Trump. The July article was up for a short time before the first lady’s lawyers reached out, “challenging the headline and framing of the article,” according to an editor’s note. Last week, that note was updated to state that the Daily Beast had also removed a section of a podcast titled “Trump’s Epstein Scandal Can’t Stop Won’t Stop” that referenced Melania Trump and featured Wolff.Melania TrumpAug 13Melania Trump demands Hunter Biden retract ‘extremely salacious' Epstein commentsDonald TrumpSep 16Four arrested after photos of Trump and Epstein projected onto Windsor Castle during president's U.K. visitTrump AdministrationSep 8House committee releases Epstein ‘birthday book' and other docs from his estateA spokesman for the first lady, Nick Clemens, told NBC News in a statement: “First Lady Melania Trump’s attorneys are actively ensuring immediate retractions and apologies by those who spread malicious, defamatory falsehoods. The true account of how the First Lady met President Trump is in her best-selling book, ‘Melania.’” In the book, Melania Trump said she first met her husband at a party at the Kit Kat Club in September 1998 in New York City and that they were introduced by someone else, not Epstein. These were just the latest in a series of retractions related to the first lady and the Epstein saga. References to Melania Trump were also removed from a new book about Britain’s Prince Andrew, released last month. It’s unclear whether the publisher received any kind of legal notice from the first lady’s attorneys or whether it decided to pull the material on its own.An earlier version of the book, which was reviewed by NBC News, also alleged that Epstein “facilitated” the introduction of Melania and Donald Trump, and included other mentions of the first lady. The book did not allege that she was aware of any illegal activity. Those references no longer appear in the book.“Several passages” have been removed from the U.S. edition of the unauthorized biography of Prince Andrew, the author’s publicist confirmed. The publicist, Jesse Nash, did not provide a reason for the passages’ removal.A HarperCollins UK spokesperson said the same had been done for the U.K. version: “We can confirm that several passages from Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York by Andrew Lownie have been removed in consultation with the author.” The book by Lownie, a historian, was published in the United Kingdom on Aug. 14 and includes, among other details of Prince Andrew’s life, the timeline of his ties with Epstein, who died by suicide in jail in 2019. In the United States, Lownie self-published in ebook and audiobook formats.Melania Trump has never been accused of any wrongdoing connected to the late financier. The president was friends with Epstein for years before they had a falling out.President Trump told reporters recently that he’d told Melania Trump to “go forward” with legal threats against publications and individuals who have falsely suggested that Epstein introduced the first couple. “Jeffrey Epstein had nothing to do with Melania and introducing,” he said. “But they do that to demean. They make up stories. ... I told her, let’s go ahead and do it. I let her use my lawyers. She’s very upset about it.”In recent weeks, the first lady’s team has also sought retractions and apologies from high-profile Democrats who have mentioned Epstein and Melania Trump on podcasts, including from former President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter. Last month, the first lady’s personal attorney, Alejandro Brito, sent a letter to Hunter Biden and his lawyer demanding a retraction and apology for comments he made in a recent interview suggesting that Epstein had introduced the first lady to Donald Trump. The letter said the first lady would otherwise seek more than $1 billion in damages.“Failure to comply will leave Mrs. Trump with no choice but to pursue any and all legal rights and remedies available to her to recover the overwhelming financial and reputational harm that you have caused her to suffer,” Brito wrote.Biden responded with an expletive in a follow-up interview posted online, saying “f— that, not gonna happen.”As of Sept. 17, Melania Trump has not filed a lawsuit against Hunter Biden.Days before Biden’s refusal, Democratic strategist James Carville issued an apology and retraction for a podcast segment in which he made similar claims about Epstein and Melania Trump. “After the episode, we received a letter from Melania Trump’s lawyer. He took issue with our title of one of those YouTube videos from that episode and a couple of comments I made about the first lady. We took a look at what they complained about, and we took down the video and edited out those comments from the episode. I also take back these statements and apologize,” Carville said on a subsequent episode. Both Trumps posted about the Carville apology on social media, with the president writing, “Melania is GREAT!!!”Tom Winter contributed.

It is hard to imagine worse publicity for a tech firm than “our product convinced a teen to kill themselves.” Yet that’s the mess OpenAI finds itself in, after its beloved flagship chatbot, ChatGPT, was implicated in the death of U.S. teenager Adam Raine in April. The family has since sued, alleging that ChatGPT mentioned suicide 1,275 times to Raine in their interactions and repeatedly provided advice on specific methods for accomplishing the task. Now, the company is attempting to formally address the issue – by introducing age assurance.Silicon Valley loves its principles, and a statement credited to OpenAI and World CEO Sam Altman says “some of our principles are in conflict, and we’d like to explain the decisions we are making around a case of tensions between teen safety, freedom, and privacy.”The company pledges to take privacy seriously and treat its users “like adults.” For example, it says, “the default behavior of our model will not lead to much flirtatious talk, but if an adult user asks for it, they should get it.”‘Chat, what’s the death cap mushroom?’ New fixes limit bad adviceBold faced font is saved for the third principle, which is about “protecting teens.”“We prioritize safety ahead of privacy and freedom for teens; this is a new and powerful technology, and we believe minors need significant protection,” Altman says. That protection is apparently to take the form of an “an age-prediction system” that will “estimate age based on how people use ChatGPT” and default to under-18 settings “if there is doubt.”Technically, this would be classified as an age inference method, which makes assumptions based on behavior and patterns. In this, it is similar to YouTube’s recently announced ambient age check system.Alstman says that “in some cases or countries we may also ask for an ID; we know this is a privacy compromise for adults but believe it is a worthy tradeoff.”For those identified as teens, there will be tighter restrictions on “flirtatious talk” or “discussions about suicide or self-harm even in a creative writing setting.”“If an under-18 user is having suicidal ideation, we will attempt to contact the users’ parents and if unable, will contact the authorities in case of imminent harm.”Altman’s statement closes with a justification: “we realize that these principles are in conflict and not everyone will agree with how we are resolving that conflict. These are difficult decisions, but after talking with experts, this is what we think is best and want to be transparent in our intentions.”‘Chat, are you the Reaper?’ More cases say AI can be deadlyGiven Altman’s history with regulation, one might be tempted to translate that as, “a tragic event and ensuing lawsuit have forced us to introduce measures we’d prefer not to introduce.” But there is also a hint of panic in the move; according to a report from 404 Media, the chatbot has also been implicated in the murder-suicide of 56-year-old man, and is facing a new lawsuit related to the suicide of a 13-year-old girl. The piece notes that ChatGPT used to be much more limited in how it was allowed to interact with users. “Competition from other models, especially locally hosted and so-called ‘uncensored’ models, and a political shift to the right which sees many forms of content moderation as censorship, has caused OpenAI to loosen those restrictions.”This week, Adam Raine’s parents testified to U.S. Congress, explaining how trusting ChatGPT proved to be fatal for their son. CBS News quotes his father, Matthew: “What began as a homework helper gradually turned itself into a confidant and then a suicide coach.”The report also quotes Josh Golin, executive director of Fairplay, a group advocating for children's online safety, who believes OpenAI’s announcement was timed to coincide with the Raines’ testimony. “This is a fairly common tactic – it’s one that Meta uses all the time – which is to make a big, splashy announcement right on the eve of a hearing which promises to be damaging to the company.”“What they should be doing is not targeting ChatGPT to minors until they can prove that it’s safe for them. We shouldn't allow companies, just because they have tremendous resources, to perform uncontrolled experiments on kids when the implications for their development can be so vast and far-reaching.”

Spam and phishing emails are an annoying everyday occurrence that everyone is probably familiar with and finds annoying. These intrusive messages often clog up your inbox and require tedious deletion or filtering. Worse still, those who are act carelessly run the risk of falling victim to scammers. But, as strange as it may sound, spam emails can actually be useful to the potential victims scammers are targeting, which is why you shouldn’t delete them. Why you shouldn’t delete spam emailsAll major mail providers are starting to rely on complex and adaptive spam filters that are getting better and better at distinguishing between wanted and unwanted e-mails. An important prerequisite for this learning effect: The software must be able to practice and this is exactly what spam mails are useful for.Instead of deleting spam mails, we recommend you proceed as follows:If you use an email client such as Outlook or Thunderbird: Manually mark relevant messages as spam (or as “junk”) if your email program hasn’t already done it itself. This will train the software’s spam filter and you will (hopefully) have to deal with annoying spam mails less and less in future because the automatic filter will improve. If you retrieve emails with a browser: Depending on which provider you use, you can mark the annoying messages as spam in different ways. Of course, you only need to make this effort if the junk emails are displayed as normal emails in your inbox and haven’t already ended up in the spam folder. You can mark such messages in the inbox (tick the box) and send them directly to the spam folder using the “Spam” or “Junk” command in the menu bar. This also works with individual (open) emails, where the path to the spam bin is sometimes via a “Move” button above the message text. Both privately and professionally, these procedures promise less rubbish mail in the long term. The senders of such messages are also blacklisted more quickly. If you use a shared mail server in the office, you may be doing your colleagues a great service by preventing them from having to deal with the same scam messages that you’ve already marked as spam and sorted out yourself. Tip: Junk mail is usually automatically deleted from the relevant folders after 30 days. Storage space problems are therefore rarely a cause for concern, even if the messages are not removed manually. If the junk folder does not empty itself, you should delete the content yourself once a month.Caution: Don’t unsubscribe from spam emailsMany providers and email clients now offer an easy way to unsubscribe from unwanted advertising emails, newsletters, and the like with a quick click directly in your inbox. This function is useful if you do not want to delete yourself from mailing lists by hand or aren’t interested in the advertising it contains. However, the well-intentioned function also harbors a danger, at least in the case of fraudulent messages. This is because you inadvertently inform the sender that your own e-mail address actually exists and is actively managed.Spam crooks send millions of emails every day, sometimes indiscriminately to randomly generated recipient addresses. They are often unaware of whether the accounts they write to really exist or whether messages are read there–until users click on the unsubscribe button. The scammers then receive a request to stop writing to the email address in question, whereupon, of course, they do exactly the opposite.Further reading: 4 free temporary email services that stop spam deadSome helpful tipsWith a few simple rules, you can better protect yourself against spam and scams on the internet.Be suspicious: Sounds banal, but it could have protected many victims from cyber crime. As soon as you are unsure about a sender or the content of new messages, you should become skeptical and, if in doubt, assume that a scam is being attempted. This applies in particular to requests for payment or if you are asked to provide personal data.Keep calm: If someone asks you to act quickly (and therefore rashly) in a supposedly urgent email, you should become suspicious. Honest companies do not put pressure on customers and do not immediately threaten to send reminders if you do not immediately comply with requests.Avoid links in emails: If you are asked to follow a link in a message, then it may be sensible to select the relevant pages yourself. Either enter the URL in your browser (if you know it) or let Google find the page you are looking for.Do not open unknown attachments: Stay away from dubious e-mail attachments. Malware can also be hidden in Excel spreadsheets, Word documents or even image files. In executable files (EXE) or archives (ZIP, RAR, etc.) anyway. You should also avoid HTML files, as they can redirect to insecure servers.Digital bodyguards: You are on the safe side with these anti-spam and anti-virus programs.Spammers and scammers are becoming more and more sophisticated. Even experienced users can be taken in by the brazen crooks. If you want to protect yourself better, you can turn to professional software, it makes life difficult for the scoundrels on the net.Bitdefender Total SecurityBitdefender Total SecurityRead our reviewPrice When Reviewed:From £49.99Best Prices Today:£29.99 at PCWorld Software Store | £49.99 at BitdefenderBitdefender Total Security specializes in protection against online scammers and malware and offers functions ranging from virus protection and a firewall to defense against ransomware. EBS is proud to unveil the newly enhanced NeoLine 112 Mk2 bass cabinet, now shipping with key upgrades that bring even more power, low-end, and reliability to the stage. The first significant change: the cabinet is now 4 inches deeper, offering a noticeable improvement in low-end response, projection, and overall tonal richness. This enhancement ensures that today's bassists get the punch and presence they need from a compact cabinet, whether they're in the studio, on tour, or pushing the limits live.Second, EBS has swapped out the previous flip handles in favor of a single heavy-duty deep-dish handle. This small but significant upgrade helps eliminate the risk of rattling noise, making the cab perform securely even at high volumes, while also improving durability and ease of transport. Third, the high-performance tweeter is now isolated and sealed from the rest of the cabinet, which also helps to reduce the risk of noise due to the sound pressure within the cabinet.Despite the deeper cabinet, and due to the Neodymium speakers and choice of wood, it remains a lightweight cabinet, weighing in at 14.35 kg (31.6 lb).Already a favorite for its lightweight construction and road-ready build, the updated NeoLine 112 (Mk2) now delivers even greater performance with no compromises. It's a compact speaker for serious players. Despite the improvements, the price remains intact. The updated NeoLine 112 Mk2 is available now.Find out more at https://ebssweden.com/cabs/neoline/

Microsoft and Asus are bringing forth the new Asus ROG Xbox Ally handheld next month, and it’s kind of a big deal. Arguably the most noteworthy Xbox device to emerge in over a decade, it’s also arguably not an Xbox... since it’s running full Windows 11. But to create an omnibus of all your installed games in one UI, Microsoft is updating its Xbox app with an integrated view. This has been in testing for a while, centralizing a single launch area for games from the Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Activision-Blizzard’s Battle.net, and GOG. Games are automatically added to the Xbox app’s “My Library” area upon installation. Fortnite on the Epic Games Store also makes an appearance on the Xbox Wire story (spotted by The Verge). The update is live on my PC, and indeed, I’m seeing a bunch of games on my system in it. Just so many games. Getting info from Steam seems to be a little hit and miss—several of them are showing a missing logo or a generic one, like the Unity logo for a demo.Michael Crider/FoundryMicrosoft isn’t the first company to try uniting the disparate interfaces for buying, installing, and playing games on Windows. But as the gatekeeper of the platform with new hardware to push, it might have the best chance of actually pulling it off. Just in time, too. The clunkiness of Windows 11 in handheld form factor is well-known, and the various attempts to get around it by companies like Asus and Lenovo have left a lot to be desired.Today’s Xbox app update also shows third-party apps in a simplified, touch-friendly launcher for handheld PCs. According to the Xbox Wire post, an additional update “coming later in September” will show you your cloud playing history across Windows devices—again, just like Steam already does. The world’s fondness for matcha is about to be tested by steep price increases.Global demand for the powdered tea has skyrocketed around the world, fueled by consumer interest in its health benefits and by the bright green matcha lattes bubbling up on social media. In the U.S., retail sales of matcha are up 86% from three years ago, according to NIQ, a market research firm. But the matcha market is troubled. In Japan, one of the biggest matcha producers, poor weather reduced this year’s harvest. Matcha is still plentiful in China, another major producer, but labor shortages and high demand have also raised prices there. For Americans, there’s the added impact of tariffs. Imports from China are currently subject to a 37.5% tariff, while the U.S. has a 15% tariff on imports from Japan. It’s not clear if tea will be exempted from tariffs because it’s a natural product that’s not grown in significant quantities in the U.S. — an accommodation that the Trump administration has made for cork from the European Union. The Commerce Department and the U.S. Trade Representative didn’t respond to messages left by The Associated Press.Aaron Vick, a senior tea buyer with California-based tea importer G.S. Haly, says he paid 75% more for the highest-grade 2025 crop of Japanese matcha, which will arrive in the U.S. later this fall. He expects lower grades of matcha to cost 30% to 50% more. Chinese matcha — while generally cheaper than Japanese matcha — is also getting more expensive because of high demand, he said.“People should expect an enormous increase in the price of matcha this year,” Vick said. “It’s going to be a bit of a tough ride for matcha devotees. They will have to show the depth of their commitment at the cash register.”Even before this year’s harvest, growing demand was straining matcha supplies. Making matcha is precise and labor intensive. Farmers grow tencha — a green tea leaf — in the shade. In the spring, the leaves are harvested, steamed, de-stemmed and de-veined and then stone ground into a fine powder. Tencha can be harvested again in the summer and fall, but the later harvests are generally of lower quality. There are ways to cut corners, like using a jet mill, which grinds the leaves with high pressure air. But Japan has other issues, including a rapidly aging workforce and limited tencha production. And despite Japanese agricultural ministry trying to coax tea growers to switch to tencha from regular green tea, many are reluctant to do so, concerned that the matcha boom will fade. That’s giving an opening to China, where matcha originated but fell out of favor in the 14th century. Chinese matcha production has been growing in recent years to meet both domestic and international demand.Chinese matcha has historically been considered inferior to Japanese matcha and used as a flavoring for things like matcha-flavored KitKat bars instead of as a drinking tea. But the quality is improving, according to Jason Walker, the marketing director at Firsd Tea, the New Jersey-based U.S. subsidiary of Zhejiang Tea Group, China’s largest tea exporter.“We are seeing more and more interest in Chinese matcha because of capacity issues and changing perception,” Walker said. “It used to be the idea that it has to be Japanese matcha or nothing. But we have a good product too.”Starbucks is among the companies using matcha from China for its lattes. The company said it also sources matcha from Japan and South Korea. Dunkin’ and Dutch Bros. didn’t respond when asked where they source the matcha.Josh Mordecai, the supply chain director for London-based tea supplier Good & Proper Tea, said he is approached almost daily by Chinese matcha suppliers. For now, he only buys matcha from Japan, but the cost to acquire it has risen 40% so he’ll have to raise prices, he said.Mordecai said he saw more demand for matcha in the last year than in the previous nine years combined. If matcha prices continue to rise, he wonders if consumers will switch to other tea varieties like hojicha, a roasted Japanese green tea.“We’ll see if this is a bubble or not. Nothing stays on social media that long,” Mordecai said.Julia Mills, a food and drink analyst for the market research company Mintel, expects the social media interest in matcha to die down. But she thinks matcha will remain on menus for a while.Mills said matcha appeals to customers interested in wellness, since it contains antioxidants and l-theanine, an amino acid known for its calming effects, and it’s less caffeinated than coffee. Millennials and Generation Z customers are more likely to have tried matcha than others, Mills said. The traditional way of preparing it, whisking the powder together with hot water in a small bowl, also appeals to drinkers who want to slow down and be more intentional, Mills said. That’s true for Melissa Lindsay of San Francisco, who whisks up some matcha for herself every morning. Lindsay has noticed prices rising for her high-end matcha, but it’s a habit she’d find hard to quit.“It’s not just a tea bag in water,” Lindsay said. “It’s a whole experience of making it to your liking.”David Lau, the owner of Asha Tea House in San Francisco, hopes to keep customers drinking matcha by limiting price increases. Lau raised the price of his matcha latte by 50 cents after the cost the matcha he buys from Japan more than doubled. He’s also looking into alternate suppliers from China and elsewhere.“We’re in the affordable luxury business, you know, just like any other specialty cafe. We want people to be able to come every day, and once you reach a certain price level, you start to price people out,” he said. “We want to be really cognizant and aware of not doing that.AP Video Journalist Haven Daley contributed from San Francisco.—Dee-Ann Durbin, AP Business Writer

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy reminisced about his relationship with right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk Sunday in the wake of his killing last week, recounting a 2001 meeting in which he said they became close friends. Online critics, however, were quick to point out that RFK Jr.’s timeline had at least one major issue.Speaking Sunday at a memorial vigil for Kirk at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., RFK Jr. said that after meeting Kirk, the two would go on to become "spiritual brothers,” and credited the right-wing influencer with his unification with President Donald Trump.“I met Charlie for the first time in July of 2001,” RFK Jr. said. “I went on his podcast, and I think we approached each other with a lot of trepidation at that time, but by the end of the podcast, we were so amazed, we were spiritual brothers and we were friends.”RFK Jr.’s supposed meeting date with Kirk, however, quickly drew attention online.“Charlie Kirk was born in 1993,” wrote Dianne Callahan in a social media post Monday on X, who owns a Georgia-based college prep organization and has amassed nearly 8,000 followers. “He would have been eight years old.”Kirk was 31 years old at the time of his fatal shooting last week while speaking at a Utah Valley University event in Utah. He would go on to co-found the conservative advocacy organization Turning Point USA in 2012 when he was 18 years old, making a meeting with RFK Jr. in 2001 highly unlikely.“Maybe 40-year-olds becoming soulmates with 8-year-olds is normal in MAGA,” wrote X user “The Radical Left,” who describes themself as an “LGBTQ ally’ and has amassed more than 1,000 followers. Kirk has seen an outpouring of support in the wake of his killing from conservative figures, including from President Donald Trump himself, who announced last week that he would be posthumously awarding the right-wing influencer with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian award in the United States.“Why did RFK Jr become soul mates with an 8-year-old Charlie Kirk?” wrote political consultant and commentator Julien Hoez on X, who’s amassed more than 17,000 followers. “That’s weird, even for the GOP.”RFK Jr. says he met Charlie Kirk in July of 2001 and they quickly became "soul mates."
