Two people were killed when a small plane crashed in a highway median in Dartmouth, Massachusetts, on Monday morning.The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office identified the two people killed as 68-year-old Thomas Perkins and his wife, 66-year-old Agatha Perkins of Middletown, Rhode Island. Both of them were on the plane.A woman who was driving a car that was struck by part of the plane was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford with non-life-threatening injuries.Federal Aviation Administration officials will assume primary responsibility for the crash investigation, state police said.[See more photos and video from the crash here]State police said the crash involved a fixed-wing airplane and occurred around 8:15 a.m. They said the plane crashed on the median of I-195, resulting in a fire on the ground.Video from the scene showed what looked like the main body of the plane on fire in the median, with another flaming piece of the wreckage on the other side of the road, just off the shoulder.A damaged car was also seen in the video. The DA confirmed the car was impacted by a piece of the plane from the crash.The National Transportation Safety Board confirmed that the Socata TBM-700 had departed from new Bedford Regional Airport, about four miles away. The plane is registered under Easton Air LLC in Middletown, Rhode Island.In a Facebook post, New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell extended his condolences to the loved ones of those lost in the “tragic plane crash.” New Bedford Regional Airport officials are prepared to support the National Transportation Safety Board in its investigation, Mitchell said.“I am grateful that the crash miraculously did not result in serious injuries to motorists on Interstate 195,” he said.Eric Desouza told WJAR that he was in traffic on I-195 when the plane crash occurred.“We were coming down the highway, and then all of a sudden everybody locked up the brakes,” he said. “And we all kind of zig zagged. Nobody hit each other where I was. Then within five minutes, the police descended on the scene.”“We all just kind of sat there waiting for them to sort this out. Finally, the policeman came over and said there had bene a plane crash... They had to empty all of the cars from westbound and then back all of us — tractor-trailers included — back down the highway and then cross over the median.” “It’s not something you see every day,” Desouza added. “Certainly nobody when they woke up this morning expected to be hit by a plane, as you can see out there, or to be hours late to work for those of us just trying to get to work.”The Associated Press contributed to this report.
