Men the Trump administration sent to El Salvador megaprison freed in prisoner swap

More than 200 Venezuelan immigrants whom the Trump administration had sent to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador have been flown to Venezuela, El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said in a post on X.The move was part of a prisoner swap in which the Venezuelan government released “a considerable number of Venezuelan political prisoners ... as well as all the American citizens it was holding as hostages,” Bukele said, in exchange for the Venezuelan nationals who had been imprisoned in El Salvador. In a post of his own, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Friday, “Thanks to @POTUS’s leadership, ten Americans who were detained in Venezuela are on their way to freedom.” The U.S. nationals were back in the U.S. as of Saturday night, according to a U.S. official. They are Wilbert Joseph Castaneda, Jorge Marcelo Vargas, Lucas Hunter, Jonathan Pagan Gonzalez, Ronald Oribio Quintana, Erick Oribio Quintana, Fabian Buglione Reyes, Renzo Humanchumo Castillo, Juan Jose Faria Bricen and Danud Hanid Ortiz, according to another U.S. official.Rubio also praised Bukele for “helping secure an agreement for the release of all of our American detainees, plus the release of Venezuelan political prisoners.”The Venezuelan immigrants were deported from the U.S. under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798, a rarely employed wartime law. The Trump administration has declared a Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, an invading force, and used the act to deport Venezuelan immigrants who it says have ties to the gang. More than 200 men — some of them asylum-seekers who said they were at risk of persecution in Venezuela — were sent to El Salvador’s Terrorism Confinement Center, or CECOT, in March. Family members of several men believed to be held there have denied they had ties to the gang. They have pleaded for the men to be released from El Salvador’s prison system, which is known for human rights abuses, and returned to Venezuela. In a video provided by the Salvadoran government on Friday, several Venezuelan men can be seen leaving a charter bus with their hands zip-tied as they walk past a line of national police guards and into a plane set to take them back to their home country. Two of the men could be heard hurling expletives as they were loaded on to the plane.“Damn dogs, all of you,” one man, who also gave a middle finger to the camera, said in Spanish.Venezuelan Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace Diosdado Cabello, said the government there would continue to try to bring home Venezuelans imprisoned in the U.S. and El Salvador. “We will keep demanding the return of all the Venezuelans kidnapped by the government of the United States, kidnapped by the government of El Salvador,” Cabello said in televised remarks. “All of them, we demand that they return them to our country. To their home country.” A senior administration official said the swap was “down to the wire.”“We’re dealing with a regime in which, you know, there’s always a degree of uncertainty on their side, a degree of uncertainty from our side and things that you would normally expect to move in in a normal way tend to not move in a normal way,” the official said. “The United States continues to support the restoration of democracy in Venezuela and calls for the release of all the remaining political prisoners,” they added. The American Civil Liberties Union, which sued the administration over its use of the Alien Enemies Act in March, told NBC News it had not been told about the CECOT detainees’ release before it happened. Responding to reporting from Reuters earlier Friday about the prisoner swap agreement, the ACLU’s Lee Gelernt, the lead counsel in the litigation, criticized the Trump Administration.“The government allowed these individuals to languish in a notorious gulag for more than four months with zero due process and, with this latest maneuver, appears to be trying to avoid all court rulings,” Gelernt said.He added, “Whether these individuals are in El Salvador or Venezuela, the use of the Alien Enemies Act by our government during peacetime was illegal. Period!”As news of the prisoner exchange spread, the family members of men suspected of being held in CECOT said they were anxiously waiting for the plane carrying the prisoners to land in Venezuela.Ringniber Rincon, the 18-year-old daughter of suspected detainee Ringo Rincón, told NBC News that she and her two siblings were eager for their father to return to their hometown of Maracaibo.Rincon wrote that she was “anxious to know more about my dad and know how he is as he is coming out of four horrible months.” But she added that she was hopeful, “he is coming here and I will be with him again.”Monica Alba and Abigail Williams contributed.

First alert: Downpours, severe storms possible today (live radar)

What a nice day Saturday but now changes will set in with round of scattered strong thunderstorms coming in Sunday afternoon and evening. The greatest threat being damaging wind gusts. A cold front sweeping through the region will help spark a line of storms between 2 and 10 p.m. Small hail is possible and localized flooding/water on the roads possible. These storms should move quickly to avoid higher flash flood potential. It will feel muggy through the day with highs in the 80s and dew points near 70 making it feel more like the low 90s. Behind the front, to start the week, a gorgeous stretch. Highs in the 70s to low 80s, low humidity, and cool nights dipping into the 50s.Pleasant days hold through midweek before heat and humidity return quickly by Thursday and especially Friday. Highs could push well into the 90s again, and another round of storms is possible sometime Friday or Friday night as the next front approaches. Most of the week looks dry though, making for a nice break from the unsettled pattern.

Astronomer CEO resigns after Coldplay ‘kiss cam' scandal

Data company Astronomer said Saturday that its CEO has resigned, days after a “kiss cam” at a Coldplay concert in Massachusetts showed a man and a woman embracing each other before running off and becoming one of the most viral moments of the year. The New York-based tech company said in a statement on X that its CEO Andy Byron “tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted.”Byron was identified by online users as the man in the viral video, with users claiming that he is a married man. However, NBC News has not independently confirmed this or identified the woman.“As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding,” the company said. “Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met.”The company added that it will begin a search for its next chief executive, while its co-founder and Chief Product Officer Pete DeJoy will service as its interim CEO.Byron did not immediately respond to a request for comment and has not responded to previous inquiries. The debacle began on Wednesday at a Coldplay concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough when a “kiss cam” displayed couples in the audience. When the camera landed on a blond woman and a silver-haired man — later believed by social media users to be Byron — the woman covered her face and the man ducked out of the frame.Coldplay’s lead singer, Chris Martin, appeared to poke fun at the awkward moment.“Oh, look at these two. You’re all right,” he said, according to video footage from the concert that circulated widely online. “You’re OK. Oh, what? Either they’re having an affair or they’re just very shy.”The moment went viral online, with videos of the encounter accruing millions of views across X, Instagram and TikTok, and spawning thousands of memes. On Friday, Astronomer spoke out for the first time since the viral moment, saying in a statement that Byron was placed on leave. The little-known company, which has under 500 employees according to its LinkedIn profile, appeared to address how the fanfare around the “kiss cam” incident has affected its reputation in its Saturday statement.“While awareness of our company may have changed overnight, our product and our work for our customers have not,” the company said.

How does Terry McLaurin's contract situation with Commanders play out?

Training camps start next week for many NFL teams, and one of the most interesting storylines centers around Washington Commanders star Terry McLaurin. The veteran wide receiver is entering the final season of a three-year deal he signed in 2022, but he wants a new contract now. McLaurin addressed the contract dispute when speaking to reporters earlier this week, and he didn’t sound pleased. “Yeah, I’ve been pretty frustrated, I’m not going to lie,” McLaurin said. “Everything that has transpired up to this point has been disappointing and frustrating. I want to continue my career here. I’ve created my life here. My wife and I have bought our first home here, so this has been somewhere where I’ve always wanted to be.”“Just to see how things have played out has been disappointing. I obviously understand everything is a business, but at the same time, I want to put myself in a position where I’m valued and I feel appreciated.”🔊 Next Pats: Why Terry McLaurin would make the PERFECT Patriot | Listen & Subscribe | Watch on YouTubeSo, how does the McLaurin situation ultimately play out? The New England Patriots still need a No. 1 wide receiver. Should they call the Commanders and ask about McLaurin? Would the Commanders actually consider a trade at some point?NBC4 Sports Washington’s J.P. Finlay joined Phil Perry on NBC Sports Boston’s Next Pats Podcast to give his take on McLaurin’s future.“To me, if Terry McLaurin became available, a lot of NFL teams would be interested. I don’t think he’s becoming available, honestly,” Finlay said. “I think they get this done. I think there’s still plenty of time. (Commanders tight end) Zach Ertz said the other day, I think on Kay Adams’ (show), that it’s the middle of July and we don’t play until early September.“I think there are a few different factors. One, Terry McLaurin means so much to this organization and the Washington fan base that I don’t think ownership — which has really regained the trust of fans down here after 25 years of misery — I just don’t see them not getting to the finish line.“I think (Commanders GM Adam Peters) wants to run his ship right, and if you look at how San Francisco did their negotiations, a lot of time they’re contentious right up until the end, and it’s amazing how an eight-figure check can change people’s feelings, right?”More Patriots coverageNew England PatriotsJul 16Should Patriots call Commanders about Terry McLaurin amid contract dispute? The Commanders are Super Bowl contenders if franchise quarterback Jayden Daniels is healthy. They had a really good offense last season, and that unit could be even better in 2025 after the offseason additions of star wideout Deebo Samuel and veteran left tackle Laremy Tunsil.Trading McLaurin would significantly weaken Washington’s offense at a time when the franchise is in win-now mode. So from an on-field perspective, it doesn’t make any sense for them to move him. The Commanders don’t have any other wide receiver who can replicate the total package of skills he brings to the field each game.“If you look at the Commanders’ offense, which was really good, really explosive last year, you add Deebo Samuel, you add Laremy Tunsil — clearly they’re in it to compete right now,” Finlay said. “If you remove Terry McLaurin from that offense — Deebo is a unique puzzle piece. He’s an excellent player, but he’s not a route runner, you know what I mean? He’s not like a pure receiver.“You take Terry off that offense and your top pure receiver becomes Noah Brown, and then you’re talking about Luke McCaffrey, a guy they drafted last year and like, but he didn’t have much production as a rookie. They drafted another kid this year in the fourth round, Jaylin Lane, and there’s real excitement about him, but he projects as a punt returner, slot receiver guy.“If you take Terry off this offense, I do think Kliff Kingsbury and Jayden Daniels can manufacture some offense, but you lose verticality in your offense, and I can’t imagine they want to do that.”Also in this episode: Phil shares his thoughts on the contract dispute between Terry McLaurin and the Commanders and what it could mean for the PatriotsPhil previews Patriots training camp by sharing his five breakout candidates, and five position battles to watchPhil opens up the mailbag to answer your questionsThis story uses functionality that may not work in our app. Click here to open the story in your web browser.

Utility companies are closely watching the demand the searing temperatures are putting on the power grid. Technology like artificial intelligence has also put more demand on the system. The Eversource power distribution operations center in Dorchester is filled with real-time information where crews monitor the power grid to assure it runs as designed. “The blue line is the forecasted energy use, and the lighter line is the actual,” said Doug Foley, the president of electric operations for Massachusetts for Eversource, while showing NBC10 Boston real-time energy consumption data. Amid scorching heat on Wednesday, Eversource called on its partners who voluntarily agreed to reduce their consumption during high-use days. “That was about 80-100 megawatts that our customers reduced in order to match generation,” Foley said. The balancing act has gotten trickier with AI tools. “A ChatGPT AI query actually uses 10 times the amount of energy as a basic search through Google or Yahoo,” said Mathew Carrara, president of Doble Engineering. The Boston-area company works with utilities like Eversource to help determine if their system needs tweaking to keep up with demand. “We basically monitor the equipment that is in play and say, ‘Hey, you are operating at a safe level. You should be okay with a certain amount of demand depending on what that demand could be,’” Carrara said.Vincent Lopopolo, of Holden, says he uses power and AI: “I wouldn’t have graduated college without AI. I had no idea it was in big demand. I thought it was just like using a google search.” Carrara says AI relies on supercomputing to be able to run a query in a matter of seconds. “Every time someone uses an AI format, the drain on the power grid is instant and because we don’t know when someone is going to do a ChatGPT search, the drain on the grid is unknown,” he said. “It can happen any time of the day, 24 hours, so AI and data centers as a whole are having a lasting impact on the power grid.”Carrera calls it one question that even AI may need a few years to figure out: “How do you generate this same type of intelligence but using less energy.” There are companies, Carrara said, trying to make the technology more efficient, but it is likely years away.
