Defense's final witness expected to resume testimony as Read's retrial nears its end

Karen Read’s defense team is expected to call their final witness to the stand on Wednesday, with the end of her second murder trial now on the horizon.Fireworks have continued in the courtroom as the defense gets closer to resting their case, including with the potentially pivotal testimony delivered by Dr. Elizabeth Laposata.Laposata, a former medical examiner, reviewed the autopsy of John O’Keefe and several other documents related to his death, and gave her conclusion during her testimony.“Do you have an opinion as to whether or not the wounds that you see, the pattern injury that you see on Mr. O’Keefe’s right arm, is consistent with an animal bite or claw marks?” Alan Jackson asked her.“Yes, it is, very much,” Laposata replied. “By looking at the body, I could tell there was no evidence of impact by a vehicle.”She also said she concluded that the body did not have hypothermia. Her findings are a stark contrast to the the prosecution’s case. Last month, the Commonwealth called Dr. Irini Scordi-Bello, a Massachusetts medical examiner, who definitively said that hypothermia did contribute to O’Keefe’s death.Laposata went on to say that she examined O’Keefe’s x-rays and saw that his bones were intact and there was no breakage or fractures, whish she said are typical for a pedestrian collission.Prosecutors worked to discredit her opinion by bringing up her job history, specifically the criticism she received as Rhode Island’s Chief Medical Examiner after the Station nightclub fire.Judge Beverly Cannone still does not believe she is qualified enough to be a “dog bite expert”.She was followed by Dr. Andrew Rentschler, a biomedical engineer from ARCCA. He is expected to return to the stand on Wednesday to finish his testimony as the defense’s final witness. Read has officially decided that she will not take the stand.More Karen ReadMassachusettsJun 10Doctor called by Karen Read team says John O'Keefe wasn't hit by SUVKaren Read23 hours agoKaren Read trial recap: Likely last 2 defense witnesses take the stand

A man previously convicted as a sex offender is accused of recording a woman on his cellphone while she was changing in a Target fitting room in Wareham, Massachusetts, authorities said.Gregory Mattos, 37, of Mashpee, is charged with photographing an unsuspecting nude person, Wareham police and the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office said.Police said they were called to the store on Cranberry Highway on Monday.“I noticed a phone above the wall,” said the alleged victim. The woman, who does not want to be identified, was trying on bathing suits when she noticed a black cellphone held over the fitting room door. She told police she “froze in shock,” as she was “completely nude.”“It was creepy and scary,” she told NBC10 Boston. The 26-year-old Bridgewater resident, who has a speech disorder, preferred that her mom speak on her behalf.“It was a dressing room for both men and women,” said the mother. “Maybe they need to change some of the policies.”Police secured surveillance video from the store and a manager told police he recognized the male as a “frequent customer who often lingered near the fitting rooms occasionally ‘for hours,'” according to court records.“He could have harmed her physically in the dressing room,” said the woman’s mom. “It’s pretty isolated. I’m glad all he did was film her.”Target Loss Prevention officers provided surveillance footage of the suspect leaving the store on a moped, police said.About an hour later, Mattos was found and arrested while fishing nearby on Main Street, prosecutors said. When officers asked him if he had been at Target, he acknowledged he was but then blurted out, “I wasn’t filming any females in the fitting room,” according to court records.Officers hadn’t even told him why they were questioning him.At his arraignment Tuesday at Wareham District Court, Mattos pleaded not guilty. While prosecutors requested bail be set at $50,000 cash, he was placed on $5,000 cash bail with conditions that he must stay away from Target stores and not contact the victim. The district attorney’s office noted that Mattos is registered as a Level 2 sex offender.“That makes me pause,” said the woman’s mother. “How are they keeping the sex offenders off the streets and away from women in dressing room?”Mattos is due back in court for a pretrial conference on June 30, prosecutors said.“The safety of our guests and team members is our top priority and we have robust procedures, policies and training in place to ensure that our stores are safe places to shop and work,” a Target spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday. “We have zero tolerance for this type of behavior, and as soon as we became aware of the situation our team contacted the Wareham Police Department. We are assisting them with their investigation and will refer additional question to them at this time.”Police say Mattos has been involved in similar incidents in the past.He was charged with upskirting at a Rue 21 store back in 2016.More Massachusetts newsConsumer14 hours agoStudent loan delinquencies spiking, tanking credit scoresBoston12 hours agoWu rips federal policy, says Trump administration ‘does not understand Boston'Chicopee12 hours agoTrooper seriously hurt in Mass.
