Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez is accused of approaching and assaulting a delivery driver while intoxicated before the driver then stabbed him multiple times in what he described as self-defense, according to a court filing from Indianapolis prosecutors.Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears said that the incident “should have never happened.”“What began as a disagreement between a 38-year-old former professional athlete and a 69-year-old man should not have escalated into violence or left anyone seriously injured,” Mears said in a statement Sunday. The incident first became public when the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department reported that Sanchez had been stabbed during a physical disturbance at 12:30 a.m. Authorities said Sanchez was hospitalized and later placed under arrest for battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication.Sanchez does not have an attorney listed in the court record. Representatives for Sanchez did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment on the allegations on Sunday.Confrontation in an alleyPolice alleged that Sanchez approached a truck driver making a delivery at a nearby hotel and then escalated the encounter, according to charging documents filed on Sunday morning.Officers first responded to reports of a man shot at 12:35 a.m. when they found Sanchez with multiple stab wounds, according to a probable cause affidavit signed by Detective Joshua Stayton. A second man was also seen in an alley with a “laceration to his left cheek.”A witness told Stayton that he was parked and waiting to pick up his child when he saw two men interacting, the affidavit said. The witness thought the interaction was odd “because he thought the two men were using their cellphones to record each other.”Stayton requested a search warrant for Sanchez’s clothes and cellphone, which he collected from the hospital, the affidavit said. He also reviewed surveillance video from both the Westin and Marriott hotels that share the alley where the incident occurred. The Westin video quality was poor, the affidavit said, but the Marriott footage showed a man believed to be Sanchez running up to a large box truck backed into the Westin hotel’s loading dock area. Sanchez disappears and then reappears before approaching the driver’s door, the affidavit said.NFL3 hours ago3 takeaways from the Vikings' last-minute win over the Browns in LondonMac JonesOct 449ers' Mac Jones saw dead body before Rams game: Reportformula one5 hours agoGeorge Russell wins F1 Singapore GP as McLaren seals constructors' title againThe truck driver, identified only as P.T., is an employee for a company that “specializes in commercial cooking oil recycling and disposal,” according to the affidavit.“Mr. Sanchez approached the driver’s door of the truck and opened the door and began a conversation with P.T.,” the affidavit said. “Mr. Sanchez and P.T. stand by the driver’s side door for a few minutes and then P.T. walks over towards the security office doors of the Marriott.”The security video shows Sanchez follow P.T. multiple times as he walks around the truck, according to the affidavit. The incident then apparently escalates when P.T. darts for his driver’s side door.“Mr. Sanchez is seen running after P.T. and the video shows Mr. Sanchez grabbing and throwing P.T. towards the wall of the Westin,” the affidavit said.Driver used pepper spray and knifeIn an interview with Stayton, P.T. alleged that Sanchez approached him to tell him he cannot park at the loading dock and claimed to have spoken with the hotel manager. The driver did not have his hearing aids in at the time, forcing him to get closer to Sanchez, the affidavit said.“When P.T. leaned in, he stated that Mr. Sanchez smelled of alcohol and his speech was slurred,” the affidavit said. The driver alleged that Sanchez got into the cab of his truck but got out once P.T. told him he wasn’t allowed inside. But Sanchez kept repeating that the manger didn’t want P.T. to be there and tried to get into the truck again, the affidavit said.Sanchez also allegedly tried to block P.T. from retrieving his cellphone to contact his manager, P.T. told the detective. At that point, P.T. said he tried to reach the Marriott’s security office nearby and walked around the truck multiple times to get his cellphone. Sanchez allegedly shoved P.T. while the driver was again attempting to get his phone from the truck, the affidavit said.“P.T. realized things had escalated, and he was now in physical danger, so he reached into his pocket and grabbed his pepper spray and sprayed Mr. Sanchez in the face,” the affidavit said. The pepper spray appeared to affect Sanchez briefly, but he wiped his face and advanced toward him again, according to the truck driver.P.T. told police he feared Sanchez was “trying to kill” him and that’s when he pulled out his knife.Sanchez then “came at him” and P.T. said he stabbed him two or three times with the knife, according to the affidavit. The truck driver said that he felt himself thrown backward and landed on pallets on the ground. In that time, P.T. said he was unaware of what Sanchez was doing but that he saw the man’s feet coming towards him. The driver felt it was a “life or death situation,” the affidavit said.“Somehow, P.T. made it to his feet, and when Mr. Sanchez came at P.T. [he] stabbed Mr. Sanchez the last time,” the affidavit said.Fox Sports declines to comment on affidavitCourt records show a judge issued a $300 cash bond in Sanchez’s case and a pretrial no contact order. The former quarterback had a successful collegiate career at the University of Southern California and spent about 10 years in the NFL before his 2019 retirement. He was drafted by the New York Jets in 2009 and spent four seasons with the team before signing with the Philadelphia Eagles. Sanchez also spent time with the Dallas Cowboys, Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears.Sanchez worked as a commentator for ESPN following his retirement and joined Fox Sports in 2021 as game analyst.Fox Sports initially released a statement on Saturday following the news of Sanchez’s stabbing. The sports network reported that he was in stable condition following the incident.“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mark, and we ask that everyone please respect his and his family’s privacy during this time,” the statement said.Fox Sports declined to comment to NBC News on Sunday following the filing of the probable cause affidavit.

Federal officers shot an armed person who was among the drivers that rammed an agent’s vehicle on Saturday morning in Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security said. The shooting was reported at around 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of South California Avenue and West 35th Street in the city’s Brighton Park neighborhood.DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin said agents were conducting routine patrols on Saturday morning when they were rammed by 10 cars and “boxed in.”“Agents were unable to move their vehicle and exited the car,” she said in a statement, in part.McLaughlin said one of the drivers who rammed the law enforcement vehicle was armed with a semi-automatic weapon, and law enforcement was “forced to deploy their weapons and fire defensive shots.”The woman, according to the DHS assistant secretary, drove herself to the hospital for treatment. No law enforcement officers were injured, authorities said.“Unfortunately, JB Pritzker’s Chicago Police Department is leaving the shooting scene and refuses to assist us in securing the area,” the assistant secretary said, in part, following the shooting. “There is a crowd growing and we are deploying special operations to control a growing crowd...”McLaughlin said the woman, who hasn’t been identified, “was named in a CBP intelligence bulletin last week for doxing agents and posting online ‘Hey to all my gang lets fu** those mother ******* up, don’t let them take anyone.’”DHS Secretary Kristi Noem posted about the shooting on social media, saying she was deploying “more special operations to control the scene.”Today in Chicago, members of our brave law enforcement were attacked—rammed and boxed in by ten vehicles, including an attacker with a semi-automatic weapon.I am deploying more special operations to control the scene. NBC Chicago’s Sky 5 helicopter captured video of law enforcement members, some of whom were carrying long guns, in the parking lot of an auto business near South Western Avenue and West 35th Street.Footage posted on the Citizen app from the shooting scene showed ICE agents positioned in a line behind crime scene tape as protesters delivered chants, including “Don’t take the bait” and “ICE, go home!”Protests have occurred in recent days as part of an immigration enforcement effort called “Operation Midway Blitz,” which has seen more than 1,000 arrests since its inception on Sept. 8, according to DHS.While demonstrations have taken place in Chicago, including in the downtown area, they have primarily been centered around an ICE processing center in west suburban Broadview. Five protesters were arrested on Friday following demonstrations on both sides of the processing center, including in a new designated protest area more than a block away from the building.NBC Chicago reporters and photographers have witnessed tensions rise between agents and protesters. Escalating clashes between demonstrators and armed personnel have occurred at the site, with video capturing federal agents deploying tear gas.Protests continued outside the suburban facility on Saturday, and as of 2 p.m., no arrests had been made, authorities said.

Japan’s governing party elected Sanae Takaichi as its new leader on Saturday, setting her up to become the U.S. ally’s first female prime minister.Takaichi defeated Shinjiro Koizumi 185 to 156 in a second-round runoff vote to become leader of the conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has governed Japan almost uninterrupted since the end of World War II.The leadership race was triggered last month when Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he would step down after a year in office. Though Takaichi is likely to succeed him as prime minister of Japan, the world’s fourth-largest economy, when parliament votes later this month, it is not guaranteed since the LDP-led coalition lost its majority in both houses in the past year.
