Tech giants wobble as Tesla drives market gains amidst mixed sector performances

Sector OverviewThe US stock market is showcasing a tapestry of contrasting trends today. Tech giants like Oracle faced a noteworthy dip, sliding down 2.41%, whereas Microsoft managed a modest climb of 0.14%. The semiconductor realm is relatively stagnant, with Nvidia barely moving at -0.01%.The consumer cyclical sector is buoyed by an impressive performance from Tesla, which surged by 3.33%, offsetting the downturn from Amazon, up only 0.13%. Meanwhile, the financial sector showed mixed signals, with gains from JPMorgan Chase (up 0.96%) contrasting with stagnant movements of Visa (-0.09%).Market Mood and TrendsThe market sentiment feels cautiously optimistic yet polarized. The eagerness around auto manufacturers like Tesla portrays a more positive inclination among investors despite tech's hiccups, evidenced by Oracle's downturn. Communication services seem tepid as Google slid by 0.86%, pointing towards careful repositioning or profit-taking endeavors.Strategic RecommendationsInvestors should consider enhancing their exposure to sectors demonstrating resilience such as consumer cyclical, especially focusing on electric vehicles and home improvement retailers despite Home Depot's mild dip (-0.40%).Monitor the technology sector's unfolding dynamics before increasing exposure; current dips might represent buying opportunities, offering a potential rebound upon stability restoration. The financial sector's diverse performance suggests careful calibration, keeping an eye on potential rebounds or defensive stocks as safe harbors. For continued market insights and a deeper analysis into stock trends, feel free to explore InvestingLive.com for comprehensive stories and real-time updates. DHS removes clip featuring comedian Theo Von after he balks at being used in ‘banger' deportation video

Podcaster and comedian Theo Von urged and apparently succeeded in getting the Department of Homeland Security to take down a viral video clip of him saying, “Heard you got deported, dude, bye!” Von, 45, whose “This Past Weekend” podcast is influential within the “manosphere” and popular with young men, shared the DHS video to his more than 1.6 million X followers on Tuesday. The bizarre video includes what appears to be footage of immigration authorities making an arrest, portions of President Donald Trump’s address to the United Nations this week, erroneous deportation statistics and the face-to-camera clip of Von.Von slammed DHS’s use of his snippet on X, writing: “Yooo DHS i didnt approve to be used in this.”“I know you know my address so send a check,” Von added. “And please take this down and please keep me out of your ‘banger’ deportation videos,” he said. “When it comes to immigration my thoughts and heart are a lot more nuanced than this video allows. Bye!”US & WorldUnited NationsSep 23Trump criticizes U.N. for failing to end wars and address immigration concernsTrump AdministrationSep 22What to know about Trump's H-1B visa shake-upCaliforniaSep 20California bans most law enforcement officers from wearing masks during operationsDHS did not immediately return a request for comment. Shortly after an original form of this story was published, DHS took down the video.Von’s rebuke of DHS was seen as a surprise given his friendly history with leading figures in the Trump administration, including the president.Trump appeared on Von’s podcast during the height of the presidential campaign in August 2024, which Trump said was at the encouragement of his youngest son, Barron. In May, the White House brought Von on the president’s first official foreign trip to speak at Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, prior to Trump addressing the troops. And in June, Vice President JD Vance appeared on Von’s podcast for nearly an hour and a half.Although immigration is one of a handful credited for Trump’s election, support for the president’s handling of the issue has declined in recent months. The Trump administration has also been criticized for sharing similar bizarre videos, including one generated by AI showing an outlandish vision of Gaza that featured a shirtless Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sunbathing. On Monday, the Department of Homeland security posted a video on X showing immigration raids dubbed with the Pokémon television series’ theme song “Gotta Catch ‘Em All.”The Pokémon Company International said in a statement they were aware of the “video posted by the Department of Homeland Security that includes imagery and language associated with our brand.”“Our company was not involved in the creation or distribution of this content, and permission was not granted for the use of our intellectual property,” the company said. When asked if they be taking legal action regarding the video, the company said: “We don’t have anything to share at this time.”Sarah Dean and Austin Mullen contributed.

Aerospacelab Secures Galactic-Sized Funding: $110M Boosts Bid For Europe's New Satellite Constellation

Aerospacelab has closed an extended Series B funding round, raising €94 million euros ($110 million) to advance its "ambitious industrial roadmap" to scale up production of off-the-shelf satellite constellations. The funding is roughly divided between €56 million euros from private investors and €38 million euros from a European financial institution. The cash haul should accelerate production at Aerospacelab's Belgium Megafactory, which the company says will produce up to 500 satellites per year. It will also speed research and development focused on taking control of components and processes to minimize third party contracting. Molecular discovery reveals how chromosomes are passed from one generation to the next

When a woman becomes pregnant, the outcome of that pregnancy depends on many things—including a crucial event that happened while she was still growing inside her own mother's womb. It depends on the quality of the egg cells that were already forming inside her fetal ovaries. The DNA-containing chromosomes in those cells must be cut, spliced and sorted perfectly. In males, the same process produces sperm in the testes but occurs only after puberty.

Electron microscopy reveals new method to make exotic metal alloys

Humans have been making metal alloys for thousands of years, and most of us can conjure a rough mental image of the process—it involves red-hot molten metals being mixed, poured, and shaped in a sweltering workshop or factory. This approach still works perfectly well for the traditional metals we see every day, like steel. But advanced metals with special chemical and mechanical properties, ones that scientists are investigating to use in energy technologies like long-lasting batteries and extreme-temperature engines for aerospace vehicles, need a more refined approach.

Climate change is a major economic threat. But, he says, being better prepared now will actually prove cheaper than taking the gamble of hitting a climate tipping point. Phoenix Mercury secures OT win against Minnesota Lynx to even WNBA semifinals

Alyssa Thomas nodded her head repeatedly as she walked back to the Phoenix Mercury bench after evening Phoenix’s WNBA semifinal series with the Minnesota Lynx. Thomas appeared calm, as if she had expected the Mercury to do what few have ever done before: stage a comeback in the WNBA playoffs against the Lynx. Proposed H-1B changes could redefine global talent acquisition

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) revealed its thoughts on a pending overhaul of the current H-1B visa program with the release Tuesday of a Federal Register notice laying out a set of proposed new rules for the recruitment of foreign workers. The 105-page notice, which follows late last week’s executive order from President Donald Trump that imposed a $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications, “proposes to implement a weighted selection process that would generally favor the allocation of H-1B visas to higher skilled and higher paid aliens, while maintaining the opportunity for employers to secure H-1B workers at all wage levels, to better serve the Congressional intent for the H-1B program.”In his order, Trump wrote, “information technology (IT) firms in particular have prominently manipulated the H-1B system, significantly harming American workers in computer-related fields. The share of IT workers in the H-1B program grew from 32% in Fiscal Year (FY) 2003 to an average of over 65% in the last five fiscal years. In addition, some of the most prolific H-1B employers are now consistently IT outsourcing companies.”In its notice, the DHS noted, “the changes proposed in this rule would better ensure that the H-1B cap selection process favors relatively higher-skilled, higher-valued or higher-paid foreign workers rather than continuing to allow numerically limited cap numbers to be allocated predominantly to workers in lower skilled or lower paid positions.”To that end, it estimates that wages earned by successful H-1B applications would total $502 million in 2026 and soar to $1 billion the following year and $1.5 billion in 2028.Workforce division a possibilityJustin Eggstaff, managing partner, US federal government, at Info-Tech Research Group, said, “the new suggested H-1B visa process may change how companies deal with global talent. From a policy perspective, it is premised on notions of protection of US workers by creating more discretion when companies bring foreign workers into the equation.”Effectively, he said, “it could create a real division of the workforce: larger companies will pay the price of admission and continue to attract specialized talent from overseas, while smaller companies and startups may or may not pay the price of admission or may simply be out of the international worker marketplace altogether.”Eggstaff added, “where skill set is critical and unavailable in the US market, companies will pay for the positioning. However, if the value is marginal, they would consider hiring in the local workforce, restructuring the project team, or utilizing alternatives such as low-code/no-code or AI.”This, he said, “could lead to more job opportunities for US workers, particularly at the entry and mid-level, while foreign talent may be increasingly limited to highly specialized, senior roles where the business case justifies the expense.”David Foote, chief analyst and research officer at Foote Partners, a firm that that focuses on what it describes as “the people (versus vendor) side of managing technology,” said that what is being suggested in the notice is it is “an attempt to be fairer, but salary is not a proxy for skill level. It never has been. Right now, a senior cybersecurity analyst in San Jose, that job is averaging almost $180,000 a year. That job in Grand Rapids, Michigan is about $108,000 a year.”Biggest challenge? How to make it workHe said that within the current system, “the largest numbers of H-1B visas are in California, Texas, and Virginia. Why? Well, because in California there are a lot of tech companies, Texas, a lot of tech companies, and in Virginia, because you’ve got this whole area around Washington DC, which is just full of tech hires. It’s very easy to see that it’ll continue to benefit those areas.”Aside from the proposed changes “definitely being a disadvantage for startups and nonprofits and academia because there’s a lot of hiring in those areas,” Foote said, the proposal from the DHS “also adds complexity, and I think litigation risk as well.”There are, he said, “a lot of things that I don’t like as an analyst, that I see that are unfair about the current system. Anything that’s based on a lottery can be unfair. So, it’s not a bad idea to weight by higher wages, but I see a lot of problems in how to make that a reality, how to actually engineer that so it’s fair, because it’s going to hurt people.”Another wrinkle that needs to be sorted out, Foote pointed out, is if you base a winning H-1B visa on salary, what happens when the world moves from the Knowledge Economy to the Innovation Economy, which is what is currently happening. “There are all these incredibly valuable soft skills that humans have that are going to be more highly prized,” he said. “How can an H-1B visa program possibly connect pay to these softer skills? This is a huge issue.”The public will have 30 days, beginning on Wednesday, to submit comments about the proposed changes via the Federal Register.
