Marathon’s first post-launch patch nerfs its tough AI, and even more positive changes are on the way soon

The patch notes for Marathon's first update rolled out this morning, and they're full of good news and quick responses to feedback gathered in the game's first week. One of the game's bigger early-game complaints about how difficult the UESC enemies are was quickly addressed, with the health of "most UESC enemies and shield HP of UESC bosses" being reduced by a small amount. But after playing a few rounds, it feels like the difference isn't all that noticeable, and I'm glad. Image via Bungie After playing Marathon for quite some time now, I've become accustomed to the difficulty level of the robots who patrol every map in the game. They're tough, but feel necessary as part of the punishing experience, so I'm glad that Bungie didn't over-correct here. And I get the feeling that many of the game's players agree. "With this change we hope to alleviate some of the resource burden in both Solos and Crews when it comes to engaging UESC in combat," Bungie said in the patch notes. "The goal here is to allow your bullets and meds to go further without reducing too much of the UESCs bite. We see the feedback loud and clear that players appreciate the friction that our UESC combatants provide and we have no plans to change that direction." A number of other solid changes make for a good initial update, including doubling the default distance of objective nav points appearing when nearby, nerfing the very powerful thermal scopes a bit, and also increasing the number of Med Cabinets and Munitions Crates on Perimeter. Last night, Bungie also confirmed that the Rewards Pass will be improved in future updates, including the addition of four new Runner Shells in the season one pass, along with a shotgun weapon skin and profile emblem. This was a hasty response to feedback that the season one pass is very lackluster , so it's a good sign to see improvements coming within a week of launch. https://twitter.com/MarathonDevTeam/status/2031498746736132379 "From the start, our goal with Marathon has been a real partnership with this community - and the respectful, candid feedback you’ve shared has already made a difference," Bungie said. "When you take the time to be thoughtful and constructive, it helps us move faster and make better calls, and we’re committed to acting on that as quickly as we can." Bungie posted the full patch notes on Twitter/X , so take a look for yourself before deploying into any Runs today. Microsoft backs Anthropic in lawsuit against Pentagon

Microsoft is throwing its weight behind Anthropic in asking a federal court to block the Trump administration’s designation of the artificial intelligence company as a supply chain risk. Microsoft, in a legal filing, is challenging Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s action last week to shut Anthropic out of military work by labeling its AI products as a national security threat. The Pentagon took the action against Anthropic after an unusually public dispute over the company’s refusal to allow unrestricted military use of its AI model Claude. It asks for a judge to order a temporary lifting of the designation to allow for more “reasoned discussion.”

A Lego PlayStation Is Coming This Year, Report Claims

Lego enthusiasts can soon build and own the original PlayStation in brick form, according to a prolific leaker purporting that a Lego set based on Sony's first console is releasing at the end of 2026. An Instagram user with the name lego_minecraft_goat, who has a history of leaking Lego sets, claimed in a post that a 1,911-piece PlayStation set including "at least the controller and the console" will be out this December, costing $160. The user captioned the post: "I hope I will exist tomorrow." The PlayStation wouldn't be the first major video game console to receive the Lego treatment--Lego put out several Nintendo-themed sets starting in 2020, including a now-retired 2,646-piece NES set . Last year, Lego released a remarkably authentic 421-piece recreation of the original Game Boy . Continue Reading at GameSpot

Before the Oscars: watch it or skip it

With awards season upon us, it’s that familiar time of year when one might realize they have seen little to no buzzworthy films this past year. Perhaps you were too busy shoveling your driveway this February to catch “K-Pop Demon Hunter.” Or maybe, after realizing there are 469 known feature films featuring Frankenstein’s monster, you thought it untoward to see the latest iteration of “Frankenstein” by Guillermo del Toro before viewing the previous 468 installments. Whatever the case may be, if you need some last-minute conversational guidance for your upcoming Oscar party, I am here to get you up to speed on some of the 2026 Academy Award nominees that are worth seeing — and worth skipping. “One Battle After Another” — SEE IT Arguably the best movie of the year and a film that reflects our contemporary American moment better than anything else. Watching “One Battle After Another” is like looking in a mirror — witnessing an oppressive white nationalist government (represented by a grotesque Sean Penn) attempting to thwart a coalition of resolute freedom fighters (led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Teyana Taylor, Chase Infiniti, Regina Hall and Benicio del Toro). It’s a 31⁄2-hour revolutionary roller coaster with unexpected laugh-out-loud humor, capped off with one of the greatest chase scenes ever put on film. A must-see. “F1”— SKIP IT A 21⁄2-hour formulaic car commercial with next to no redeeming qualities. I’d skip it faster than Brad Pitt driving a McLaren at 200 mph. “Bugonia” — SEE IT (BUT EXPECT NIGHTMARES) Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons are hauntingly terrific in this twisted kidnapping escapade. Plemons plays a gaunt conspiracy theorist who thinks our capitalist overlord (Stone) is an alien intent on destroying mankind and taking over the world. A brilliant take on the complexity of conspiracies, the film keeps you guessing until the very end about what’s true and what’s not. “Hamnet” — SEE IT (BRING TISSUES) A Shakespearean tale of love and loss. To call it a tearjerker would be an understatement. A powerful and instant classic. “Sinners”— SEE IT (IF YOU LIKE HORROR FILMS) The one film of the year where the buzz surrounding the project might outweigh its artistic ambitions. Racist white vampires terrorizing Black juke joint patrons in the Jim Crow South is as scary a horror premise as there is, and there’s loads of powerful symbolism at play. But at the end of the day, it felt like just another gory, gruesome horror movie. Loved the Buddy Guy cameo, though. “Marty Supreme” — SEE IT Whether you like Timothée Chalamet or not, his performance as the Trump-esque Marty Mauser — a professional pingpong player and hustler who will stop at nothing to achieve his goals — is an astute take on the affliction of American exceptionalism. With an anxiety-inducing pace and cadence we’ve come to expect from director Josh Safdie, the film is full of truly bizarre and memorable moments and characters. “The Alabama Solution”— SEE IT Pine Plains resident Andrew Jarecki takes viewers inside the Alabama state prison system in a documentary constructed almost entirely from cellphone footage covertly shot by prisoners. The conditions inside are utterly deplorable and completely shocking — resembling modern slavery more than rehabilitation. One struggles to make sense of the inhumanity and to come to terms with the fact that this is happening in America in 2026. The 98th Oscars will take place Sunday, March 15, 2026, at 7 p.m. The ceremony will be hosted by Conan O’Brien and broadcast on ABC, with streaming available on Hulu.

Dynamic gel helps scientists grow organs more reliably in the lab

Miniature organs grown in the lab can organize themselves into complex shapes. But they never do it the same way twice, which makes it hard to use these so-called "organoids" to study disease. Now, scientists at UC San Francisco have created a new material that helps organoids grow in a more predictable way. They mixed microparticles of alginate, a complex carbohydrate derived from algae, into Matrigel, the standard gel used to grow organoids. This made the gel more akin to the soft but supportive environment inside the body that tissues normally grow in.

Ancient Filipino skeleton reveals a rare hip condition further complicated by scurvy

The growing paleopathological literature shows that scurvy was not a rare problem among people living in the ancient Asia-Pacific tropics. Scurvy is increasingly identified throughout the region, primarily in children but also in adults. In a study published in the International Journal of Osteoarchaeology, Dr. Chloe Boucher and her colleagues conducted a follow-up paleopathological study of a young adult male from the Philippines' Metal Period (~2000–1800 BP), previously identified as having suffered from hip ankylosis.

Diabetics who rely on glucose monitors are alarmed by recall linked to 7 deaths

Michael Ford was not in good health, but his Type 2 diabetes was manageable. His son, Davonte Ford, was his full-time caregiver — bathing Michael, administering his medications and dutifully responding to the dips and peaks in Michael’s blood sugar. When father and son woke one November morning in their Oakland, California, home to a low blood sugar alert from Michael’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor, part of a top-tier glucose monitoring system from medical manufacturer Abbott, Davonte did not question the reading. Instead, he did what doctors had instructed: He gave his dad fast-acting carbohydrates. For more on this story, watch “Hallie Jackson NOW” on NBC News NOW at 5 p.m. ETDavonte had no way of knowing that eight days later, Abbott would release an urgent warning notifying U.S. consumers that about 3 million FreeStyle Libre 3 and Libre 3 Plus sensors were at risk of producing false low readings, and the company had received reports of seven deaths and more than 730 serious injuries worldwide. He also had no idea that the number that kept appearing that morning on Michael’s device was “catastrophically inaccurate,” according to a lawsuit that Davonte, 25, filed last month. So when a cup of coffee with two spoonfuls of sugar barely raised Michael’s blood sugar, Davonte brought him another. The number on Michael’s monitor edged up but then went back down. A normal glucose range is around 70 to about 180 milligrams per deciliter, with lower levels expected while fasting. Mystified that Michael’s level kept hovering around 68 mg/dL, Davonte gave him a cup of sweetened tea and a cookie, hoping to get the number up.Instead, Michael’s speech slowed. His eyelids became heavy. Panicked, Davonte called an ambulance. When paramedics arrived, Davonte was stunned to see Michael’s blood sugar reading on their equipment: 551 mg/dL, more than triple what it should have been.“My heart just dropped,” Davonte said. “Obviously, there’s a problem here.”The discovery that Michael’s blood sugar had not been as low as his glucose monitor indicated came too late, the lawsuit says. The next day, in a hospital intensive care unit, Michael, 68, died following multiple cardiac arrests.Health & WellnessMar 2GLP-1s may increase risk of osteoporosis and gout, new research findsApr 8, 2025Eating some food additives together may increase diabetes risk, study suggestsHealth & WellnessAug 6, 2025A salty twist: Diabetes risk study says french fries are a culpritDiabetes, a condition in which the body doesn’t produce enough insulin or cannot use it properly, requires patients to monitor their blood sugar vigilantly. It affects an estimated 40.1 million people in the U.S. Uncontrolled, it can cause serious complications, ranging from blindness to heart and kidney damage. The Abbott recall has put a spotlight on diabetes patients’ growing reliance on technology meant to help them and the threat it can pose to their physical and psychological health when that technology is flawed. The recall prompted at least three proposed class action lawsuits in the U.S., along with Davonte’s wrongful death lawsuit. Three other people in California, Washington and North Carolina plan to sue over harm they say they sustained from the incorrect readings, their attorneys told NBC News. Patients and attorneys have also raised questions about whether the recall was comprehensive enough and whether the true number of injuries could be higher than the 860 that Abbott cited in its latest count. Michael’s death is not counted in Abbott’s tally; while his sensor came from one of the recalled lots, Abbott did not include its particular serial number in the recall.Abbott spokesperson Lindsy Delco told NBC News that the company was “deeply saddened” by Michael’s death and said that it takes all adverse event reports seriously, documenting and investigating them. Delco said not all sensors in each lot were affected by the problem and not all adverse events are related to the recent recall, adding that anyone experiencing issues should contact Abbott customer service. She said the faulty readings that led to the recall were caused by a production line issue that was quickly fixed. The company has not yet responded in court to Davonte’s lawsuit. When continuous glucose monitors debuted more than two decades ago, they were a “complete game changer” for diabetes patients, said Dr. Amy Warriner, an endocrinologist and professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s medical school. An alternative to reliable but tedious finger sticks, in which diabetics draw small amounts of blood throughout the day to check their sugar levels, continuous glucose monitors automatically detect blood sugar levels in the fluid just below the skin’s surface with tiny filaments on sensors attached to patients’ arms. The Abbott sensors, about the size of a stack of two pennies, typically cost up to $20 per month for patients whose commercial insurance covers the system, and they offer 24/7 data that doctors say is dependable. “But it is technology,” Warriner said, “and sadly, technology can break. And when it does, it’s a life-or-death situation.”There have been smaller recalls related to continuous glucose monitors. In 2024, Abbott recalled several lots of Libre 3 sensors due to inaccurately high readings. Another major manufacturer, Dexcom, recalled hundreds of thousands of receivers linked to its monitors in 2016 and again in 2025 following dozens of injuries because of audio issues that could cause missed alerts. A Dexcom spokesperson said in an email this week that the problems have been resolved. Some diabetes patients who used Abbott sensors say that discovering flaws in a device they rely on to stay alive is terrifying. Before receiving a recall notice from her pharmacy, Angela Ivery, 71, who lives in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, said she went to the emergency room multiple times following alerts from her Libre 3 saying her blood sugar was low. At the hospital, a finger stick showed her glucose levels were normal, she said. She started having nightmares in which late relatives gave her warnings about her health, and she feared that she would die in her sleep. She now uses finger stick readings, but she said she has lasting anxiety. “I don’t go out and mingle like I used to,” she said. “I’m paranoid when I get out. I think my sugar is dropping.”Late last year, Cathy Bennett, 67, of Statham, Georgia, started receiving alerts from her Abbott continuous glucose monitor saying that her blood sugar was in the 60s. When she checked it with a finger stick, though, it was in the 170s or 180s. Her sensors’ serial numbers were not listed on Abbott’s recall website, but she believes they should have been. She has encountered others on social media who said the same thing.“It’s very disappointing,” she said, adding that she loved the device and plans to try using it again. “It helped motivate me to make better food choices.”The recall has also highlighted the potential for dangerous confusion after a product is supposed to be removed — even at large hospitals. An endocrinologist who works at a regional trauma center in the mid-Atlantic mentioned in an NBC News interview that he had just sent a patient home from the hospital with an Abbott device. Afterward, he called back to share a startling discovery: He checked the serial number of the sensor he had given to his patient and realized it was part of the recall. He called the patient immediately to arrange for a replacement and told the hospital to throw out the box of recalled sensors. While continuous glucose monitors are generally considered accurate, the American Diabetes Association said in an email that finger sticks should be available as a backup, particularly if symptoms do not match the monitor’s reading. In Miramar, Florida, Philip Myers, a Marine veteran, relied solely on his FreeStyle Libre, until the readings seesawed from the 50s to over 200 one evening in June. He stopped using it.Six months later, he received a letter from the Department of Veterans Affairs informing him that his sensor had been recalled. The letter did not mention the deaths associated with the recall, and when he and his wife learned about them from a reporter, they became emotional.“When I was in military service, I was in control, and I made the decisions,” Myers, 80, said. Trying to manage his diabetes, especially with a device that turned out to be inaccurate, “feels very hopeless, to tell you the truth, because you’re not in control at all,” he said.Delco, Abbott’s spokesperson, did not answer questions on specific cases and said in an email that the manufacturer cares “deeply about the safety and quality of our products and the people who use them.” “That’s why we continually check how they’re performing and if we identify an issue, we take action to fix it,” she said.Davonte and Michael Ford relied entirely on Michael’s continuous glucose monitor, not knowing based on Abbott’s “woefully inadequate” warnings that the sensor could malfunction, Davonte’s lawsuit says.Davonte tries to remember his father for who he was — a selfless man who loved playing the piano — rather than his father’s painful final moments, which he said have traumatized him and left him feeling empty. He said he is also fighting a sense of guilt. “I felt like I was at fault,” he said. “Everything was always well — until it wasn’t.”Jessica Herzberg contributed.
