Stale bread and bacteria could power a new era in green chemicals

Scientists have found a way to use common bacteria as tiny, green chemical factories to replace a process that currently relies on fossil fuels. In industrial hydrogenation, the hydrogen added to molecules to create products such as plastics, medicines and food typically comes from coal or natural gas. Sunny and mild today, then snow wraps up the weekend tomorrow

If you enjoyed yesterday’s sunny, mild weather, you’re going to love what’s in store for today. In fact, we’re tracking even more sunshine and high temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. Highs MetroWest will likely reach the low 50s! And with weather like this, the snow melt will continue. But all good things must come to an end. We’re tracking big changes, starting on Sunday.Boston snow SundaySunday is a First Alert day. A cold front will bring a period of light accumulating snow to our area Sunday morning through the early afternoon. This is not a major storm, and we’re not expecting major impacts. Still, some of us here in Boston and the Greater Boston area could see a coating up to 1 inch of snow.Areas generally west of the I-495 corridor toward central Massachusetts could see between 1 and 3 inches of snow here and there. This could make travel a little messy at times on Sunday, but we don’t believe this will be a crippling event for our area at this time. Much of the snow will likely push east by Sunday evening. We’ll let you know if conditions change. High temperatures will rise into the mid 30s Sunday. But by Sunday night, arctic air from the north will send our temperatures way down into the single digits and teens into Monday morning.Bitter cold returns before more snow and rainWe’ll start our Monday will bitter cold weather. High temperatures will only reach the mid 20s. Temperatures will rebound to near 40 on Tuesday and in the mid 40s by Wednesday. Just as our temperatures are beginning to warm up, another winter system is expected to bring a period of rain and snow to Greater Boston. In fact, the precipitation will likely start as snow Tuesday evening, then transition to rain into Wednesday. It’s a bit too early to tell how much snow we could see. So, check back in with your NBC 10 Boston First Alert Weather Team for updates.A much more significant warmup is possible late next week into the weekend.
