Scientists Detect "Strange Filaments" at the Heart of Our Galaxy

Researchers have zoomed in on the area surrounding the supermassive black hole lurking at the center of our galaxy, and made a fascinating discovery: an alien superstructure of "strange filaments" driving a cycle of gas emissions and replenishment. As detailed in a new paper published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, the international team of astronomers used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in the Chilean desert to produce high-resolution observations of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), a region known for continuously cycling through copious amounts of dust and gas molecules. However, how these cycles of formation and destruction actually work [...]

Researchers Propose a New Way to Search for Evidence of Life

One of the challenges of searching for life in the Universe is that there is no single universal biosignature that could reveal its presence. Even if we could tell the difference between chemicals produced by living organisms and those from non-living sources like volcanoes, we're still making the assumption that alien life would resemble life on Earth. A new paper proposes that missions search for “energy-ordered resource stratification” which only happens when both self-replication and ecological competition are present.

Late last year, billionaire Elon Musk vowed to cut $2 trillion from the government's budget with the help of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency. It didn't take long for that number to drop to $1 trillion, indicating very little thought had gone into the original calculation. And judging by the latest news, DOGE is woefully behind even that target. As the New York Times reports, Musk told president Donald Trump that DOGE anticipated "savings in ’26 from reduction of waste and fraud by $150 billion," referring to the fiscal year that runs from October 2025 to the end of [...]

Astronomers Think They've Found the Universe's Missing Infrared Light

One of the things about astronomy that captivates me is that for every question we answer, we open up a whole bunch of other questions. Dark matter and dark energy are one such phenomenon that rather continues to confound us. There’s also the mystery of missing infrared light too but a team of astronomers think they may have found it! The team examined a region of sky using the Herschel Space Telescope and, by staking 141 images, found where individual dust-rich galaxies appeared blended together. The galaxies are absorbing starlight and re-emitting infrared radiation, and is this that may well account for the missing light.

A new approach to probe hadronization via quantum entanglement

Recent physics studies have discovered that quarks and gluons inside protons, which are subatomic positively charged particles, exhibit maximal quantum entanglement at high energies. Entanglement is a physical phenomenon that entails correlations between distant particles that cannot be explained by classical physics theories, resulting in the state of one particle influencing that of another.

Healthy forests require combined deer and invasive shrub control

If left unchecked, both overabundant white-tailed deer populations and invasive shrubs like Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) can devastate deciduous native tree regeneration. Yet, a management strategy focused only on deer, or only on invasive shrubs, results in little or no forest health improvement, according to research from Ohio, spanning more than 10 years.

Einstein's dream of a unified field theory accomplished?

During the latter part of the 20th century, string theory was put forward as a unifying theory of physics foundations. String theory has not, however, fulfilled expectations. That is why we are of the view that the scientific community needs to reconsider what comprises elementary forces and particles.

Scientists observe the first 'quantum rain'

In the Quantum Mixtures Lab of the National Institute of Optics (Cnr-Ino), a team of researchers from Cnr, the University of Florence and the European Laboratory for Non-linear Spectroscopy (LENS) observed the phenomenon of capillary instability in an unconventional liquid: an ultradilute quantum gas. This result has important implications for the understanding and manipulation of new forms of matter.

New method identifies protein that may govern cancer cell movement and metastasis

Using a novel method that gives a readout of which proteins are in specific locations within cells, UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers have identified a protein that plays a key role in cell adhesion and movement. Their findings, published in Cell Reports, could help researchers better understand diverse phenomena such as cancer metastasis and cell differentiation.
