How to watch the Android Show ahead of Google I/O 2025

Google's annual I/O developer conference is coming on May 20, and for the first time, there's two major events you'll want to watch to stay on top of all the updates the company's making to its software platforms. I/O 2025 kicks off on May 20, and a week earlier on May 13, there's also The Android Show: I/O Edition, a dedicated showcase for the Android ecosystem. The Android Show: I/O Edition airs on May 13 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT, and it'll stream at that time on Google's Android YouTube channel. Since it appears to be pre-recorded, we've embedded it below, so really, you can just bookmark this page and return then. Better yet, we will be liveblogging alongside the show, so you'll see our coverage, analysis and takes in real time.Android is developed partially in the open, so there's already some indication of what could be coming with Android 16. So far, that's a visual redesign of some of the operating system's core features, like the notification shade, a take on Apple's Live Activities for tracking ongoing events and possibly a Samsung DeX-like "Desktop Mode" for Android phones. Google even appeared to accidentally publish its own blog post detailing its research around user interfaces and Material 3 Expressive, only to take it down quickly after. Unfortunately (or fortunately for Android enthusiasts), the internet never forgets.Meanwhile, I/O 2025 starts on May 20 at 1PM ET / 10AM PT with Google's keynote, typically a series of updates on Android, Search, Google Workspace and Gemini. It's worth noting: Google typically doesn't set aside separate time for Android announcements. The company said there will be some Android news at I/O, but the safe bet is that Gemini will be the star. We expect Google to share Gemini updates, along with Android XR news and maybe further demonstrations of experimental projects like Project Astra.Google's I/O keynote will be available to watch on Google's YouTube channel and right here once the livestream is up on May 20 at 1PM ET. Update, May 8 2025, 10:30PM ET: This story has been updated to include information on Engadget's liveblog of the Android Show, as well as additional information on what we expect to be announced based on leaks around Material 3 Expressive. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/how-to-watch-the-android-show-ahead-of-google-io-2025-213327621.html?src=rss

iOS 19 Beta is a Month Away With These New Features for Your iPhone
2025-05-08

iOS 19 Beta is a Month Away With These New Features for Your iPhone

The first iOS 19 beta is just one month away, and there are already many new features and changes that are expected with it.Apple should seed the first iOS 19 beta to developers immediately following the WWDC 2025 keynote, which is scheduled for Monday, June 9. Following beta testing, the update should be released to the general public in September.Below, we recap the key iOS 19 rumors so far.New Design With Floating Tab BariOS 19 is expected to introduce a new design that looks more like the visionOS operating system on the Apple Vision Pro headset.According to Front Page Tech's Jon Prosser, iOS 19 will have a glass-like appearance, with added translucency for menus, buttons, and other user interface elements. He also expects rounder app icons, and a new floating tab bar in Apple apps.Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also expects iOS 19 to have a visionOS-like design, and he believes the design changes will be the biggest since iOS 7.Stage Manager for iPhonesLast month, a leaker known as Majin Bu claimed that iOS 19 will enable support for at least a limited version of Stage Manager on iPhone models with a USB-C port.In a blog post citing sources, the leaker said that when an iPhone with a USB-C port is connected to an external display, users will be able to take advantage of a Stage Manager-like interface with multiple apps open at once on the screen. However, he said that there might be more limitations compared to Stage Manager on iPads.iPhone models with a USB-C port include all iPhone 15 models and newer.iPhones with both Lightning and USB-C ports can already be connected to external displays, but only for basic screen mirroring.End-to-End Encryption for RCSIn March, Apple said that it plans to add support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messages to the Messages app in future iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS software updates. That likely means iOS 19, macOS 16, and other corresponding updates.Apple promising end-to-end encryption for RCS messages indirectly confirms that it will be adopting the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 specification, which also includes several iMessage-like enhancements that were originally introduced in version 2.7 of the specification. iOS 18 supports RCS Universal Profile 2.4.Here are five new capabilities to expect for RCS conversations on iOS 19:End-to-end encryption, which will prevent Apple and any other third party from being able to read messages and attachments while they are being sent between devicesIn-line repliesEdit messagesUnsend messagesFull-fledged Tapback support for RCS messages, ensuring they always workiMessage conversations with blue bubbles have supported end-to-end encryption by default since iOS 5. In addition, iMessage has supported in-line replies since iOS 14, while the options to edit and unsend iMessages were introduced with iOS 16.Apple has not indicated which iOS version will upgrade RCS, but iOS 19 or a follow-up update like iOS 19.1 or iOS 19.2 seems like a safe bet.Live Translate With AirPodsAt least some AirPods models will be getting a new live translation feature with iOS 19 and an accompanying firmware update, according to Gurman. Here is how that feature will work, according to his report:The capability will work like this: If an English speaker is hearing someone talk in Spanish, the iPhone will translate the speech and relay it to the user's AirPods in English. The English speaker's words, meanwhile, will be translated into Spanish and played back by the iPhone.Google already offers a similar Live Translate feature. He also said iOS 19 will have bolstered translation capabilities, which likely means improvements are coming to the Apple Translate app.Revamped Health App With Coaching FeatureA revamped Health app is expected to debut as early as iOS 19.4 next year.Apple plans to offer a new AI-powered health coaching feature that offers personalized health recommendations, according to Gurman. The information provided by the coaching feature would be accompanied by videos from health experts that inform users about various health conditions and ways to make lifestyle improvements. For example, if the Apple Watch tracks poor heart-rate trends, a video could explain the risks of heart disease.Food tracking will be another big part of the revamped Health app, which could compete with the MyFitnessPal app, according to Gurman.Personalized SiriIn March, Apple delayed the more personalized version of Siri that it previewed at WWDC last year. The company said it anticipated rolling out the Siri upgrades at some point "in the coming year," so the features could launch as part of iOS 19 later this year. However, they could also arrive as part of a later update, such as iOS 19.1 through iOS 19.4.Whenever they launch, the Siri upgrades will include understanding of a user's personal context, on-screen awareness, and deeper per-app controls. For example, during its WWDC 2024 keynote, Apple showed an iPhone user asking Siri about their mother's flight and lunch reservation plans based on info from the Mail and Messages apps. The more personalized Siri features will require an iPhone model that supports Apple Intelligence, so you will need an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, any iPhone 16 model, or any iPhone 17 model launching later this year.EU ChangesIn March, the European Commission announced a long list of changes that Apple is legally required to implement in future iOS 19 and iOS 20 updates. The announcement clarifies interoperability requirements that Apple is required to adhere to in the EU, under the Digital Markets Act, which has been fully enforced since March 2024. The changes will further open up the iPhone and its technologies to competing companies and devices, and Apple is not happy about it. Here are some of the key requirements:Third-party smartwatches must be able to display and interact with iOS notifications by the end of 2025, which likely means iOS 19.2 or earlier.Apple must make its automatic audio switching feature available to third-party headphones by June 1, 2026, which likely means iOS 19.4 or earlier. This is the feature that allows most AirPods and select Beats to automatically switch connection between Apple devices, such as a Mac and an iPhone.Apple must make changes to iOS that allow for third parties to offer equivalent AirDrop alternatives by June 1, 2026.Apple must make changes to iOS that allow for third parties to offer equivalent AirPlay alternatives by iOS 20, or the end of 2026. iOS 20 is expected to be released to the general public in September 2026.The entire list of changes can be found on the European Commission's website.Google Gemini IntegrationIn court last month, Google CEO Sundar Pichai suggested that iOS 19 might include built-in Google Gemini integration.iPhone models with Apple Intelligence have already offered ChatGPT integration since iOS 18.2. With user permission, Siri can show ChatGPT answers directly in response to questions and other prompts. ChatGPT is also an option for Apple's system-wide Writing Tools feature, allowing users to generate text and images. Google Gemini would likely have similar integration across Siri and Writing Tools, becoming a second option alongside ChatGPT.Google Gemini is already available as an iPhone app.CompatibilityAccording to a reliable source of iOS-related information, iOS 19 will be compatible with the iPhone 11 series and newer. This means that iOS 19 would not be available on the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR, but those devices would continue to receive security updates.MoreRead our iOS 19 roundup for more details about the upcoming software update.Related Roundup: iOS 19This article, "iOS 19 Beta is a Month Away With These New Features for Your iPhone" first appeared on MacRumors.comDiscuss this article in our forums

Black Mirror’s Bandersnatch is leaving Netflix for good

Netflix has been gradually culling its library of interactive content for a while now, but Black Mirror’s Emmy award winning Bandersnatch was one of the few survivors. Until now. As spotted by What’s on Netflix, the choose-your-own-adventure film set in a fictional game development studio will be leaving the service globally on May 12.At the beginning of December 2024, only four of Netflix’s “Interactive Specials” remained, of which Bandersnatch was one. As of today there are only two left. The other is Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. The Reverend, which first debuted back in 2020 and is also being removed imminently.Netflix’s first interactive effort was 2017’s Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale, but Bandersnatch, which arrived the following year, was the first to be targeted at an adult audience, and arguably the company’s most successful of these experiments. Set in the UK in the mid-80s, it follows a young programmer who sets out to adapt a dark fantasy novel into a story-driven video game, before things inevitably take a dark turn. The film featured multiple endings and branching paths based on the decisions you made, and went on to win two Primetime Emmy Awards.Which probably leaves you wondering why Netflix is getting rid of it. Back in December, company spokesperson Chrissy Kelleher told The Verge that the technology had “served its purpose, but is now limiting as we focus on technological efforts in other areas.”Actual video games still feature prominently in the overhauled Netflix TV app, which the company has been working on since last year and will roll out over the coming weeks and months. It is also experimenting with a vertical video feature on mobile that will include clips and trailers, presumably to appeal more to the native TikTok audience. Just don’t expect to see Bandersnatch in there. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/tv-movies/black-mirrors-bandersnatch-is-leaving-netflix-for-good-144518207.html?src=rss

And the Walls Come Tumbling Down (Premium)

Last year, I described the overdue antitrust action against Big Tech as breathtaking. But that was when it was mostly EU-based. With the U.S. government suddenly coming down hard on Big Tech, everything is changing: If we know anything about this country, it's that its citizens don't understand the impact of bad behavior unless it hits them in the face. And now they can see for themselves the prison that Big Tech has erected around them. Thanks to Apple's blistering slap down in Epic v. Apple, brought on by its belligerent and anticompetitive behavior, the consumer electronics giant was forced to do what it should have done all along and let app developers communicate with their own customers. And one of the things they can communicate, using the language of their choice, is a way for those customers to make purchases outside of the app. Outside the reach of Apple's onerous 30 percent fees. And they are doing so. We wrote about how Spotify immediately updated its app to support payments outside its iOS app. But they are not alone. The first I heard to make this change was Proton, which emailed me to tell me that it would immediately allow users on iPhones make purchases on their devices."In response to the recent court ruling in the US against Apple's illegal in-app purchase monopoly, Proton will finally be allowed to let iOS users purchase subscriptions outside of the app store," Proton CEO Andy Yen said. "No Apple tax means we will lower prices for users by up to 30 percent. Worth noting, this court ruling is one of the most effective way to cut inflation in the US, by dropping the price of a significant chunk of digital purchases by 30 percent overnight. Percentage wise, it's bigger than the 10 percent tariffs [that the U.S. government] put in place last month."But there's more. And Amazon is up there with Spotify from a reach perspective. Likewise, why is it OK for Walmart to see physical books from within its iOS app without paying the Apple Tax, but it's not OK for Amazon to sell e-books from within its iOS app?Simple. Samsung's Tap to Transfer cash feature is coming to the Wallet app this month

Samsung’s “Tap to Transfer” payment feature will come to the US this month, following a preview of the feature in January when it launched the Galaxy S25 series. This will allow you to make payments to friends and family via the Samsung Wallet app on Galaxy smartphones by tapping your devices together, bypassing the need to manually transfer funds from your online banking app. Samsung says payments will land in the bank account of the recipient within minutes.Samsung’s partnership with Visa and Mastercard means that as long as you have a debit card stored in your Samsung Wallet, you can use Tap to Transfer without needing to download a separate app. Like when you make payments in a store, Samsung Wallet uses NFC to connect the respective debit card chips of the users making or receiving a payment, and if one party would rather use a physical debit card to make the transfer, it works just the same provided the card itself has tap-to-pay functionality. You can also make payments Venmo-style between Samsung Wallets by searching for the recipient’s phone number and making the transfer remotely, but this obviously isn’t as fast as the person-to-person phone bump method. Apple has its own version of this, called Tap to Cash, but it requires you to use its Apple Cash service and, as you’d expect, only works with compatible Apple devices. As reported by Android Central, the new feature was first spotted in a beta version of the app last month, along with Samsung’s version of the many emerging buy now, pay later services such as Affirm. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/samsungs-tap-to-transfer-cash-feature-is-coming-to-the-wallet-app-this-month-144100575.html?src=rss
