After more than three months in ICE detention, Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil returned to the New York area where his harrowing ordeal first began. Immigration authorities had arrested Khalil, 30, in March at the university housing complex where he lived in New York City. He was quickly transported thousands of miles away to a detention center in Louisiana, where he spent the last few months.Khalil remained defiant as he spoke to reporters and supporters on Saturday afternoon upon his arrival at Newark International Airport. “Your messages have kept me going. Still the fight is far from over, the genocide is still happening in Gaza, Israel is still waging a full war against Palestine,” said Khalil, who was flanked by his wife Dr. Noor Abdalla and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. “The U.S. government is funding this genocide and Columbia University is investing in this genocide. This is why I was protesting, this is why I will continue protesting with every one of you, not only if they threaten me with detention. Even if they would kill me, I would still speak up for Gaza.”When asked what his message would be to the Trump administration, Khalil said, “Just the fact that I’m here sends a message.”“The fact that all of these attempts to suppress pro-Palestine voices have failed now,” he said. “This is the message. My existence is a message.”Ocasio-Cortez said Khalil’s imprisonment for politically motivated. “Everybody agrees that persecution based on political speech is wrong and is a violation of all of our First Amendment rights, not just Mahmoud’s,” she said. His unprecedented detention has sparked national outrage.Further fueling the controversy, Abdalla, an American, gave birth to the couple’s first son in Aprilwhile he remained behind bars.Upon his release in Louisiana on Friday, Khalil addressed reporters briefly, saying he was excited to return to New York City and see his family.“Although justice prevailed,” he said upon his release, “it’s long, very long overdue. And this shouldn’t have taken three months.”FloridaJun 19‘Alligator Alcatraz': Florida AG proposes new migrant detention center in EvergladesImmigrationJun 17Brad Lander, NYC comptroller and mayoral candidate, detained by ICE at courtImmigrationJun 17Spanish-language journalist who documents immigration raids detained by ICE after protest arrest“Trump and his administration, they chose the wrong person for this,” he added. “That doesn’t mean that there is a right person for this. There’s no right person who should be detained for actually protesting a genocide, for protesting their university, Columbia University.”Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Tricia McLaughlin on Friday denounced the judicial order freeing Khalil and the judge who issued it.“This is yet another example of how out of control members of the judicial branch are undermining national security,” McLaughlin said in a statement. “Their conduct not only denies the result of the 2024 election, it also does great harm to our constitutional system by undermining public confidence in the courts.”The Trump administration claimed it had the authority to detain and deport the pro-Palestinian student activist, arguing that his presence in the U.S. threatened national security. Another charge against Khalil alleges that he omitted details about his work history and membership in organizations on his permanent residency application. The government cited an obscure provision in the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 that gives Secretary of State Marco Rubio authority to “personally determine” whether a foreign national can remain in the U.S. on national security grounds. An NBC News review of more than 100 pages of court filings found that prosecutors relied on unverified tabloid reports and anecdotal claims, raising doubts about the strength of their case for deporting Khalil.Less than 10 minutes after Khalil, who has no criminal history, was released from the detention center in Jena, Louisiana, the Trump administration filed a notice of appeal. A lawyer representing Khalil vowed to fight the appeal.Khalil helped lead student protests over the war in Gaza, where more than 55,000 people have been killed since Israel launched its war against Hamas. He also participated in negotiations with university officials at Columbia last year, when protests at the Ivy League school gripped national headlines for weeks and inspired similar demonstrations at universities around the world. Some Jewish students at universities across the U.S. reported antisemitic incidents as the protest movement gained traction.Khalil was the first of several foreign academics apprehended by immigration authorities in the first months of Trump’s second term. Tufts University student Rümeysa Öztürk, a doctoral candidate from Turkey, was arrested outside her home in Somerville, Massachusetts, by immigration authorities on March 25. Viral street footage of her arrest showed Department of Homeland Security officials dressed in plain clothes surrounding Öztürk, grabbing her by the wrists and escorting her into an unmarked vehicle.Mohsen Mahdawi, a 34-year-old graduate student at Columbia who was born in the West Bank, was apprehended by immigration authorities during his naturalization interview in Vermont.Federal judges also ordered the release of both Öztürk and Mahdawi in recent weeks. Other notable cases include a Georgetown University professor who was detained by ICE and later released after a judicial order, and a Brown University professor who was deported to Lebanon.Maya Eaglin contributed. This article originally appeared on NBCNews.com. ICE Barbie Hit With Lawsuit Over ‘Violent Assaults’ Against Protesters

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement via GettyKristi Noem’s Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been sued for allegedly assaulting peaceful protesters in Los Angeles demonstrating against Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids. The suit accuses DHS officers of conducting a “series of indiscriminate and terrifying immigration raids” in the city beginning on June 6. Agents reportedly brandished rifles and wore masks and heavy paramilitary gear without visible identifying information. Anytime the community protested, DHS “retaliated” by “recklessly” shooting pepper balls and rubber bullets at peaceful protesters, according to the complaint, which was filed Thursday by the ACLU of Southern California on behalf of a group of protesters, journalists, and legal observers. Godin Connaisseur MJ Review
2025-06-19

Godin Connaisseur MJ Review

A Canada-built, tastefully styled mini jumbo serves up comfort, a unique and expansive tone profile, and addictive playability.Godin may be a Canadian company that skews modern in its design approach. But staring across the room at the new Godin Connaisseur MJ, glowing in soft spring sunlight, I kept thinking about two very classic American guitar companies. Martin and Rickenbacker are famous for very different things, and one of them rarely made acoustic instruments. But check out the Godin’s sunburst finish—it sure reminds me of Rickenbacker fireglo. The herringbone-patterned purling evokes that found on a D-28 as well as Rickenbacker’s checkerboard binding. The split-hexagon fretboard inlay? It conjures thoughts of a D-45, and Rickenbacker’s shark-fins. There are practical reasons that this Godin feels like an alternate-universe offspring from the two American companies—most notably the super-satisfying playability. Hermann Rorschach might have told me I’m more inclined to see and feel these likenesses in the Connaisseur MJ (I’m genuinely captivated by the beauty of Rickenbackers and Martins). But style is a big part of what sets the Connaisseur MJ apart, and you don’t need an inkblot test to know that the Godin Connaisseur MJ is a handsome, well-built, and fine-playing flattop. It’s a guitar that reveals its virtues quickly and easily.Maple Leaf RagConsider another unorthodox melding of concepts: “mini” and “jumbo.” Obviously, they are a contradiction in terms. But as an acoustic guitar design guideline, the combination can yield pure gold. The jumbo in mini jumbo (MJ in Godin nomenclature) alludes to the body’s basic shape which, in its fluid curvaceousness, echoes Gibson’s SJ-200. But while the Connaisseur MJ isn’t a behemoth like the SJ-200, it’s not exactly mini either, and feels much more like a shapelier Martin OM. It’s a very comfortable profile that does much to alleviate the arm fatigue that can come from wrestling a dreadnought or genuinely jumbo jumbo. At $2,499 the Canada-built Connaisseur MJ is Godin’s most expensive flattop by several hundred dollars. And at that price it has to tussle with giants like Martin, Gibson, and Taylor—all of whom sell very established and well-known models in a crowded market segment that most of us could call “getting expensive enough to hurt.” So, what distinguishes the Godin in a densely populated field? Well, it’s certainly pretty, and the melding of classic flattop design touchstones and contemporary styling moves achieves a unique, attractive result rather than an uncomfortable, incohesive mash up of influences. Golden GlowIn the sonic sphere, the Connaisseur MJ exhibits many classic spruce-and-mahogany characteristics. The warm, concise fundamentals, sunset-hued, softly decaying overtones, and lack of brashness are all hallmarks of this tonewood combination. But the Godin definitely doesn’t live on the dusty, dry, and antique end of the mahogany-and-spruce spectrum. It’s alive and dynamic and responsive in ways you might even categorize as “modern,” and has ample headroom that leaves space for shifts in mood and intensity without shedding its essential voice. It’s easy to be struck by the Connaisseur MJ’s sparkle, especially when you use a light fingerstyle touch. But as I got to know the guitar, I grew to love the balance and resonance in the low end. I suspect that the mini jumbo body, and perhaps the 25.5" scale, have a lot to do with the Godin’s even, inviting voice and range. There is a beautiful combination of energy and air, even in the most softly plucked notes, and it’s easy to see how the extra expanse of spruce aft of the bridge might have a lot to do with how lively and rich the Godin sounds.“The Godin definitely doesn’t live on the dusty, dry, antique end of the mahogany-and-spruce spectrum. It’s alive and dynamic and responsive in ways you might even categorize as ‘modern.’”All the tone in the world doesn’t mean much if a guitar plays like a log. But the Connaisseur MJ shines in the playability realm. A few less-than-perfectly-dressed fret ends aside, the neck is addictively comfortable. If there’s a lot of Richard Thompson hammer-ons and pull-offs in your own playing vernacular, you’ll love the snappy touch responsiveness. The VerdictThe biggest compliment I can offer the Connaisseur MJ is the considerable time I spent with it in a meditative musical state—thinking not about a review, just basking in its warm, sprightly resonance and inviting touch response. At $2,499, the Godin arguably offers more personality than a satin-finished instrument at the same price with a more famous name. It’s well built and feels like a guitar that’s in it for the long haul. And when it comes to tone and a pure playing experience, the Connaisseur MJ shines.

Infineon unveils Secora ID V2 and eID-OS solutions for eID documents

Infineon is introducing new solutions to meet the growing need for electronic identification (eID) documents worldwide as governments advance digitalization.Infineon is expanding its government ID portfolio to satisfy the rapidly evolving requirements with two new solutions: Secora ID V2 and the eID-OS.The V2 version of Secora ID increases transaction speed by up to 80 percent compared to its predecessor, according to Infineon. Based on 40nm architecture, it can transfer data at speeds of up to 6.8Mb/s. This enables faster personalization and processing of ID documents and speedier identity checks at borders and security checkpoints.Secora ID V2 supports biometric match-on-card functions to increase data protection, the company says, and supports payment tools such as Visa, Mastercard and Calypso as well as the crypto vision ePasslet Suite.Infineon eID-OS is designed for basic ID application projects, offering a cost-optimized solution for fast time-to-market, the company claims. The standards-compliant solution is targeting CC EAL 5+ eMRTD (Common Criteria Evaluation Assurance Level for electronic Machine Readable Travel Document) certification.Featuring a 32-bit CPU, advanced cryptography accelerators, and the Integrity Guard 32 security architecture, eID-OS enables fast and secured transactions with processing times of less than 0.5 seconds. The ultra-thin contactless coil-on-module package supports thinner electronic data pages, reducing document costs, with the space saved allowing for an additional security layer, making the solution suitable for modern eID projects, Infineon says.Together, the Secora ID V2 and the eID-OS offer local security printers and card manufacturers greater flexibility in selecting the right solution for their specific project requirements, according to their manufacturer, helping to reduce development time and accelerate deployment. In March, Infineon unveiled a pair of solutions for computer vision and biometric onboarding made with Infineon’s PSoC Edge platform.

Baby of brain-dead pregnant woman kept alive under abortion law has been delivered, family says

The baby of Adriana Smith, a brain-dead pregnant woman who was being kept alive by ventilators under Georgia’s abortion law, was delivered Friday, her family said. Her mother, April Newkirk, told NBC affiliate WXIA-TV of Atlanta that the baby, named Chance, was born prematurely via emergency Cesarean section. She said the baby weighed about 1 pound 13 ounces and is in the neonatal intensive care unit.“He’s expected to be OK,” she told the news station. “He’s just fighting. We just want prayers for him. Just keep praying for him.”Adriana Smith, while pregnant with her first son.via WXIASmith also has an older son.Newkirk did not immediately respond to NBC News’ request for comment Tuesday. She previously told WXIA that the family was required to keep Smith alive under the state’s near-total abortion ban, known as the LIFE Act. Smith, whose family celebrated her 31st birthday Sunday, has been hospitalized since February after initially seeking treatment for severe headaches, her family has said.Newkirk said Smith initially went to Northside Hospital but was released and given medication. She said the hospital did not run any scans or tests.Northside did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday.A day after seeking treatment, Smith’s boyfriend woke to find her gasping for air and making gargling noises, Newkirk told WXIA. Smith was rushed to Emory Decatur and transferred to Emory University Hospital, where a CT scan showed multiple blood clots in her brain, according to the news station.Newkirk said her daughter was declared brain-dead and placed on a ventilator. She told WXIA this week that Smith will be taken off life support Tuesday.“It’s kind of hard, you know,” she told the news station. “It’s hard to process.”In Georgia, abortions are illegal after six weeks of pregnancy. Exceptions include some situations to protect the woman’s life and health, when fetal anomalies are detected, and in cases of rape and incest that have been documented with the police. The Georgia Attorney General’s Office said in a May that there was nothing in the LIFE Act that “requires medical professionals to keep a woman on life support after brain death,” WXIA reported. The office said that removing a patient from life support “is not an action with the purpose to terminate a pregnancy.” But Republican state Sen. Ed Setzler, who sponsored the 2019 law, told The Associated Press that he supported the hospital’s actions.“I think it is completely appropriate that the hospital do what they can to save the life of the child,” he said. “I think this is an unusual circumstance, but I think it highlights the value of innocent human life. I think the hospital is acting appropriately.”Emory Healthcare did not immediately respond to a request for comment. A spokesperson said in a statement last month that it “uses consensus from clinical experts, medical literature and legal guidance to support our providers as they make individualized treatment recommendations in compliance with Georgia’s abortion laws and all other applicable laws.”This story first appeared on NBCNews.com.
