Showers pass through this morning, temps make it to mid 70s

We’re starting Saturday off on a familiar note. A few showers will speed through this morning. Nothing appears too heavy and/or persistent, but they will drag into the late morning hours. The afternoon will dry out although we’re not going right back to sun. That too will lag for a few hours. Hopefully, we’ll see some rays by mid-afternoon. Surprisingly, the warmth is still with us. Highs will make it into the mid and upper 70s, with an increase in humidity.Tomorrow dawns bright and warm. We’re heading for the mid-80s with a less humid airmass. Winds will be west, so there’s no sea breeze, making this an excellent beach day.Heat returns by early next week. Highs will climb to 90 by Tuesday as we watch a cold front slice through New England. This could touch off a few strong thunderstorms later in the afternoon, so keep your eyes to the skies. This is the perfect setup for the remainder of the week, however. Outside of another storm threat Thursday, we sail into the holiday weekend with plenty of sun and warm summer temps.Enjoy the weekend and be safe!

Photos show Swiss glaciers' uncertain future as 'ambassadors of climate change'

Drip, drip. Trickle, trickle. That's the sound of water seeping from a sunbaked and slushy Swiss glacier that geoscientists are monitoring for signs of continued retreat by the majestic masses of ice under the heat of global warming. In recent years, glaciologists like Matthias Huss of the Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, known as ETHZ, and others have turned to dramatic measures to help protect glaciers like the Rhone Glacier, which feeds into the river of the same name that runs through Switzerland and France. One of those desperate steps involves using giant sheets to cover the ice like blankets to slow the melt.Switzerland is continental Europe’s glacier capital, with some 1,400 that provide drinking water, irrigation for farmland in many parts of Europe including French wine country, and hydropower that generates most of the country’s electricity. The number has been dwindling. The Alpine country has already lost up to 1,000 small glaciers, and the bigger ones...
